tattoos & formal recruitment

by: mac

I will be a freshman this fall, and have recently started a large tattoo on my arm. Does the Greek system have anything for or against tattoos? I have a moderately high GPA, recommendation letters, and experience in volunteer work, but will my tattoos prevent me from getting a bid?

large tattoos are not the norm. Why would you do that to yourself? FYI, It will also severely inhibit your ability for employment, unless you want a career in outlier artist circles, the tattoo industry, or the skin trade. Good luck with your GDI life.

There's no need to be rude. It is a simple and valid question. Tattoos don't mean a thing in my chosen career path, and my ability to work has nothing to do with the art on my body. If I am being judged solely on the fact I have tattoos, and not by my achievemfs, kind-hearted nature, or even my hard 8 appearance, then I absolutely do not want to be your sister. That materialistic attitude won't get you anywhere in life.

And it was simple and valid answer. Just because you took exception to the truth doesn't make it less truthful. I have no idea what your chosen profession is, sweetie, but a big arm tat is not going to go over in a reputable business office, lawyer's office, school, or anywhere else where you have to be professional, no matter what your tattoo artist told you. Even unemployed, under-employed or even famous actresses have to cover their tattoos for roles because MOST PEOPLE DONT LIKE THEM. Or no matter how much you lie to yourself, that's the truth.

So even though I'm a hot, fit, intelligent, well-rounded, accomplished and ambitious 18-year-old, I will not receive a bid solely because I have a tattoo on my arm that represents a very important family member that has passed?

Literally everything else about you is worthy of getting a bid, then with the tattoo you MIGHT get a bid to a bottom house like Sigma, because they need members. I'm not trying to be rude. I have a very small tattoo on my rib cage and I know other girls that are in sororities that have some too, but they are all small and concealed, so it's not that greeks as a whole are anti-ink. But yes, truthfully, a large and in plain sight tattoo, no matter how meaningful, will severely limit you. I'm sorry others were rude about it, it was uncalled for, but the information was accurate.

I had no intention of coming off as a stuck-up psycho or brat. I just wanted a straightforward answer. It's crazy to me how people can judge someone so easily before speaking with them. It is now very clear to me how superficial the Greek system can be. I will gladly enjoy my GDI life.

Find long sleeve dresses and outfits and cover it up as much as you can. You are not going to get a bid with a big honkin tattoo. Sorry.

I love tattoos :) I think they're a great way to express yourself. I never judge based on a tattoo. I have a lot of tattoos! I'm in a top house as well. You should absolutely rush. If a house cuts you for a tattoo so be it they aren't worth your time and are small minded. I know my house would absolutely take the time to get to know you and the story behind your tattoo. It's an art and a form of expression. Just because you're in a sorority doesn't mean you have to hush up all your expressions and look like cookie cutter Barbie dolls wearing lily and oversized shack shirts. Don't sweat it and please don't listen to what these superficial ladies are saying to you. Not everyone that is Greek are like the girls on here. If you are worried though, perhaps wear a cardigan into some houses so they can't judge you based on a tattoo. Let them learn about you and get to like you then reveal your tattoo towards the end and see if they're real or superficial. I wish you the best of luck and hope you still decide to rush.

If I talked to a lovely girl with an arm tattoo who had a beautiful story behind it I would certainly not cut her. If I personally was the one voting on her I would stand up and state why she belongs with us and why her tattoo should be overlooked and I guarantee my house is so understanding they would probably keep her because they trust me. I can tell you right now, discouraging a woman from rushing is an absolutely terrible and catty thing to do. Go back to high school little girl. Everyone should try.

Why would you tell her to wear a cardigan over her tattoo so we can't see it? If it's important enough event in her life to get permanently inked, then she shouldn't be ashamed of it and show it off.
Besides, I was so flipping hot during recruitment I thought I would sweat to death. A cardigan? seriously? So, the choice is, die of sweat, or wear a kind of sweater that my mom would wear and die of embarrassment? Yikes.
Just show it off. That way we cut you because you chose to be yourself, not get cut 'cause you're a crappy dresser or worse, sweat and stink. Just sayin'.

Most of us are individuals. Most of us have a mind of our own. Most of us are smart, attractive and forward-thinking. And by far the majority of us know that a tattoo is just plain tacky. The thing is, when you parade that big ol' honkin' tattoo around campus and you are wearing our letters, you represent all of us. That's why we will respectfully decline to have you join our ranks.

I actually would love to have someone like her in our letters and I am a top tier house. It represents diversity and expression. It tells people that we are not the stereotype. I'm sorry that you want to live up to the entitled, better than everyone else Greek stereotype but we all know that's not how it should be. You my friend are no better than a girl with a tattoo on her arm no matter how badly you would like to think you are. Just because she chose to express herself differently than you does not make her any less. You may cut her for having a tattoo but I know my house would never do that. I can just picture and artsy girl who dresses boho and has a fantastically interesting story behind that tattoo. I would love for people to see her in our letter. It proves we care about the story, not the look.

But seriously every single sorority has someone who has seen this thread by now and the second you walk into the house it will be obvious who you are. We've cut girls we found out were running their mouths on here before rush. And even though girls were rude to you about the tattoo, you didn't come across as a gracious or understanding person either. I'd even say conceited. So honestly, some girls will hate your tattoo and some will think it's awesome but no one wants to bid the girl outing herself and talking back on GreekRank before she even stepped foot on campus.

Right because SO MANY GIRLS get on this website. I'd say 10% of ALL GREEKS check this website on a regular basis and THATS SERIOUSLY PUSHING IT. The girl didn't sound like a psycho like you're acting like she was. She was jut making a point: if she's a well rounded, classy, intelligent, presentable, unique woman, then why should she be judged by a form of expression? She made a point and you all attacked her like dogs. I don't see she did anything wrong. She told it like it wa; you're all wing superficial and making people not want to go Greek. Hell I don't even have a tattoo at all and reading this made me not want to go Greek because you girls are exactly what I was trying to get away from in high school. Defy the stereotype, don't become it. It's embarrassing that people think we think were better than them. This is not high school.

1.) If you're not Greek, how do you know what % of Greeks get on this website? First you spout % like you know, and then later you telling us, "reading this made me not want to go Greek". Which is it?
2.) Contrary to what you think, she did sound a little disturbed. She was getting a large tattoo to "honor" a dead relative, and she asked the same question two different times on here and got the same answer. She was searching for affirmation, and she didn't get it so she asked again, then got insulted when she was told "NO". That's a all little cray-cray, sorry.
3.) Everyone gets judged in life, and recruitment is a HUGE judge-fest. THAT'S ALL IT IS. We judge everything; grades (intelligence); Looks-including physical appearance and wardrobe (sorry, we do); involvement (sense of community); etc. so when you put yourself in that position, figuratively screaming, "Judge me so I can be one of you", yeah, we're gonna judge you, DUH. That leads to conclusions regarding your personal choices/how well you'd fit in with us. So when we judge your, ahem, "art form", OF COURSE IT'S SUPERFICIAL. You ASKED us to judge you. You even paid for it.
4.) Finally, telling someone to "defy the stereotype" is nothing less than a high school mantra. YOU need to grow up and face reality. College is where you learn that you have to have great grades AND personal appearance for a large % of jobs. Not very many people want to hire Dave Navarro or Kat Von D too work in a bank, sorry.

She did nothing wrong. That's very insulting that you call Greeks superficial and judgmental. YOU may be superficial and judgemental and everyone in your house may be as well but I am not and not are many girls in my house. I can see why this girl asked the question twice. She was probably so baffled that you would literally judged her based on a tattoo that she need to reconfirm she understood you correctly. Do you actually reread what you type before you post it because you sound like the most self righteous type of human there is. You have no room to be calling this girl crazy, psychotic or self absorbed. ZERO. Also nothing else you posted made much sense.

KD should take her. Their already on their way to the bottom tier, might as well speed up the process :)

Don't know why you felt the urge to disparage KD?? since THEY'RE nice, accepting girls. W/E. Since you think THEY'RE currently mid-tier, what gives? Speaking of tiers, I know Cho-O's, AXO's, A Phi's and G Phi's who have tattoos. It's not a "tier" problem. The girls I know have small tattoos, but they have them. I'm not sure a big tat is going to help the poster anywhere now, but I say, show it. That's why she got it, right?

Sorry. Not a KD, I'm an A Phi. So what it I stuck up for another sorority? They've never done anything to me, and are generally pretty harmless. I am, however, majoring in education, and I was subtly trying to correct your grammar with my post - thus the all caps, "THEY'RE". You missed it. I'm not surprised. (Although I did misspell "Chi O". My apologies to those girls. )
