Thetas new “inclusion policy”

by: None

Just wondering how others felt about the new theta policy which was unveiled on July 23. Which was only about fifteen days before rush started. So why would a theta legacy EVER reveal that piece of information on her recruitment paperwork, you know? Revealing yourself as a theta legacy can’t help you with theta and can only hurt you with all of the other sororities. VERY poor, and likely, politically motivated decision making today.

Agree. I don’t think sororities should have any obligations to take a legacy if she is not a fit for their chapter, BUT she should at least be invited to the first round. And then cut before the last round if she’s not a fit.

If a girl is a legacy and comes to pref she is automatically at the top of our bid list according to our nationals rules. We don’t have rules about cutting before that, though, so we can still cut a legacy any time before pref.

Yep- totally politically motivated. I know a great girl who got cut. Theta strung her along and cut her right before pref. Sure Theta can do that, but think about it Theta!!! If she is a legacy, other sororities will cut her b/c they think she will go Theta. You basically leave her with nothing bc she's been cut by everyone else. It's just mean. And for Theta to have come out with that decision a mere week before Rush starts?? There was NO way a PNM could get their paperwork back and take off the info about being a legacy. Theta screwed those girls that they cut. No other way to say it. I am SO glad I got cut by them. No way do I want to have any part in treating people they way Theta treated legacy Pnms this year.

It wasn’t a chapter decision. We had no say in that rule. It was our nationals who happens to be the most left leaning nationals. They said that giving any legacy an advantage is promoting white privilege. We did our best to make our legacies feel special and get them on our bid list. Again everyone in the chapter was shocked that nationals would implement this two weeks before recruitment and there was nothing the chapter could of done.

Hello- You did NOT do everything you could to get legacies on your bid list. I know a Theta who was a double legacy and she was cut right before pref. I also know a good friend of hers who didn't have as many credentials and who wasn't a legacy did get in. Don't tell me that the other girl was just more charming or hit it off better with the actives. It makes zero sense. It was just SO undeserving and mean. By cutting her right before pref she was only left with ONE house. I'll let you guess which house that was. When she goes through rush next year she's not going to even get a RIF for Theta. Hopefully that way you will cut her right away and she can concentrate on joining a real sisterhood with people who really care about her.

100% agree with their decision. I do think that announcing it a week before pref was not the best for some of the girls, but all of the chapters were aware of this change by Theta and so legacy status shouldn't have mattered to them. Additionally, if you weren't planning on rushing your legacy then you have to let the other chapters know that (and that goes for anyone who is a legacy, not just Thetas). One of my best friends was a legacy for another chapter but still got a bid from Theta because she was vocal about her love for their sorority throughout all of rush. I understand that some girls might've been left high and dry because they came in with expectations, but as a whole, legacies are not owed anything and should be held to the same standards as every other PNM.

The problem is, she wasn't held to the same standards. She loved Theta and let them know and assumed they loved her too b/c they kept her until right before pref. If you're going to let someone go, it would be nice to do it soon enough so the pnm has a fighting change with other sororities. She had 1 left. ONE. Let's face it.....Theta really shafted some of these girls. My friend was just as, if not more involved than other girls at her high school, smart, cute, kind, etc. It's honestly almost as if they purposely cut her BECAUSE she was a legacy and let other girls in from same school who were not. The whole situation was just BAD. Her mom and her sister were BOTH Thetas at A&M. How do you think they feel? And no, this girl did not enter rush thinking she was a sure bet and that she didn't have to do anything b/c she was a legacy. She isn't like that. She's quite sweet and humble.

25 years from now if my own daughter is going thru recruitment I'll be very glad that Theta cut me and she's a legacy for a different sorority.

By pref round high school involvement, GPA, any type of resume hype does not matter, by that time its the conversations you had had at each house. Sorry you had a bad experience, all chapters knew about theta’s new rules, and at least my chapter did not cut because one was a legacy elsewhere.

i totally think what theta did was good. maybe the timing was off, but why should a legacy take away a spot from someone who may have deserved it more? the structure of the legacy process is inherently holding back BIPOCs from joining fraternities/sororities because "many times the majority of these legacies are from white families, so the mathematical possibility for a person of color to gain admittance to a historically white fraternity/sorority chapter on some campuses is exceptionally low"!!! i wish my srat would do the same, diversity and inclusion is important

Um all the girls I saw in theta were white. So you just traded a white legacy for a non-white legacy.
