why are people here so obsessed with looks?

Visiting other schools i noticed that a lot of the top sororities don't only accept traditionally pretty girls. For example schools in DC the top sororities are diverse yet everyone wants to be in them. Why do people here rate frats and sororities on their looks alone? its sad and superficial.
