sororities

by: Greek life

I'm coming to BU and have a bunch of questions about the sororities and recruitment. When is formal recruitment at BU? What is the vibe of each sorority? What makes a chapter top tier and what are the top tier sororities looking for in the girls they recruit ? How hard is it to end up in a top tier sorority? Is it mostly freshman who go through recruitment?

We do deferred recruitment so it's in the spring. Probably January. You definitely need to meet all the chapters yourself at Splash, during the Open House sessions, and recruitment. Tiers are usually based on looks, mixer schedule, personality. Each chapter takes about 40-45 new members and if you follow that there are three tops, that's
~130 girls our of 700+ girls who go through. It's typically freshmen but a lot of sophomores as well.

It's really really hard to say what a chapter is looking for without meeting the girls personally. That's kinda the point of sororities, it's hard to put your finger on it but every sorority has a common thread among them that you'll only understand by getting to know them. It's part of what makes it special, knowing that there's an unspoken bond between all of your sisters that goes beyond certain traits or stereotypes! Sorry for the lame answer lol, but it's the truth. I'd say the only thing you can really characterize is the difference between top/mid/bottom sororities. To be in a top tier you need to have a good combo of looks and an outgoing personality & preferably be someone who runs in the same circles as other top tier greeks. However most of it is a numbers game and since there are always more people wanting to go top tier than there are spots, it sometimes comes down to who they clicked more with among the group. A lot of people find they feel more comfortable in a mid tier sorority than a top tier and choose them instead, & still have friends in top tiers! This isn't like the south where your sorority defines who you are so it's never a one-size-fits all. Wait until you get on campus to start worrying about where you see yourself because it's never gonna be what you expect.
