mountain brook?
by: WestCoast
OK, I live on the west coast and am a sorority alum of a west coast university. I've seen a few people post the Chi O story on Facebook today, so I came to this site to get more of the gossip. Which I know is lame, but oh well.
Anyway, after reading all of these comments and threads about someplace called "Mountain Brook," I had to Google it. Are you kidding me that this place - a place with a median income of $100k, which is less than what I make just 10 years out of college - is the richest place in Alabama? This is what all the sororities and fraternities get themselves worked up over?
I looked up some real estate listings in Mountain Brook, and you have no idea what a STEAL it looks like to people from the west coast. $500k for a 4 bedroom house? We pay close to or more than $1MM for that in any trendy neighborhood or good suburb within an hour commute of the major city closest to where I live.
So I think it's kindof hysterical that the "top" sororities at Bama are the ones who focus so much on in-state "rich" girls from Mountain Brook, when in fact the out-of-state girls going to the "lower" houses might actually come from more money!

You are living in the past and times have changed. Love the California girls in my sorority. They actually have style and culture. The out of state students are raising the educational standards and adding so much to UA. UA is an awesome school BECAUSE of the diversity of the student body. Trust me when I say, no one wants to act like y'all. No one.

"Old money" knows that it is tacky to talk about money- EVER. If you come from old money in the South everyone knows it so there is no need to talk about it. That is why the older sororities at Alabama would prefer a girl from Mountain Brook over someone like the OP, "West Coast".

Why would you compare California to Alabama anyway? Of course real estate is more expensive. Mountain Brook has one of the top school systems in the country, and a wonderful lifestyle. It's prettier than Beverly Hills, IMO. At least we have something called tact, which you seem to lack. Stay out there, and enjoy your boorish self.

1. I never said I am from California. I said West Coast. For the record, I do not live in California, although I did attend a university there. It's not just California that is wealthy over here.
2. It's absolutely laughable that so many of you like to say that "the truly rich don't talk about money," when that's really all you do! Mountain Brook this, Mountain Brook that - MB is apparently the very symbol of money in Alabama. It might as well be code. It would be the same thing as people on the West Coast mentioning that a young lady is from The Palisades, Atherton, Palo Alto, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Medina, Clyde Hill, Mercer Island, Hunts Point, Yarrow Point, etc. (if you want to see some real mansions, you should check out the properties in these places, or for a real blow check out the modest homes/shacks you get for $500k there). So you can talk all you want about "good family" or "social pedigree," but we all know it comes down to ONE thing: money. It's not like we say things like, "We only want millionaires' daughters!" during our recruitments out here, either.
3. The universities in the west have seen heavy enrollments from out of state for a long time now. It's a normal thing for us. We understand that it sucks to have OOS students "steal" spots from in-staters, but we also recognize that it's best for our communities and employers for our flagship universities to recruit the best students regardless of locale. They pay higher tuition, therefore subsidizing you!

Stop fighting about apples and oranges. Real estate values differ around the country. Money is relative and gauche to talk about. We all should be valuing our sisters regardless of where they're from. California is great. Alabama is great. Wisconsin is great. International students are great. PANHELLENIC is great!

Should we get rid of all the out of state football players? I mean how dare they come to Bama and take over the spots on the team.
It's 2014, we can get to the moon these days stop being so inbred and let other people into your state. It's called tourism and it's a hell of a money maker.

Are you sure we're living in the past? Again, if you have to insult the local population to feel better about yourself, please go home. We don't need you. And apparently California doesn't need you either.
