Rushing with a low gpa
by: IdkI have like almost a 3.0. I wasn’t expecting to go to anything but a community college because I lived with my single mom who also couldn’t afford to get me help for school that I needed. She remarried so now we can afford alabama and I’m really nervous about rushing with a low gpa. I’m instate and have rly rly good connections to new row. I’ll be cut by most of old row, I know. I’m just so scared. I hope I get a decent house. I don’t even care what house (besides sk theta aoii and dg). I’m just so so nervous. Any advice?

First of all, the houses you say you don't want are full of awesome girls and they have GPA standards. You would be very lucky to be invited back to any of them if they saw something in you, and you can't afford to be any kind of picky with that GPA. Second, considering that you've had some financial hardship, sorority membership is probably not something you can afford, so you had better do some research on the cost and rethink the idea of rushing. Third, it's great that you have overcome some difficulty to get to come to Bama, but your background wouldn't get you a sympathy vote and wouldn't make up for bad grades.

The GPA requirement for most houses, even the houses you said you didn't want, is a 3.5 (lowest a 3.0 for maybe SK and a 3.2 for Aphi). Girls with low GPA are the first ones to be dropped by houses during recruitment, even before open house. It doesn't matter how many connections you have, GPA drops are strict. I know of PNMs who had in-house sisters get dropped because their GPA didn't meet the house's requirement.
I think it is important to remember that 2,500 girls went through recruitment last year and only about 2100 girls got bids which is 84%. That means about 3 out of every 20 girls or 1.5 out of every 10 girls will either decide to withdraw from recruitment or, more commonly, will be dropped by every house. Even the house you think are "below" you can and will be selective with the girls they invite back. Alabama's rush is intense and every house is filled with great girls no matter what the ranks on here tell you.
If you really want to have a better chance at recruitment, I would suggest that you either COB in the spring or rush as a sophomore. By that point, the sorority will look at your college GPA (which hopefully will be higher than a 3.0) and not your high school.

Go look at the 2025 Greek Chic. You can find it online at UA Panhellenic's website. It has sections about each sorority, and each sorority has it's owned "suggested" GPA. This isn't really a suggestion, it's the minimum GPA requirement for each chapter. The only sororities that have a 3.0 or lower as a GPA requirement are DG, SK, SDT, and ADX.
There's also a section that has stats on the average GPA based on the number of invitations a girl received if you want to take a look. If a girl only got one invitation back for philanthropy, her average GPA was a 3.15. (not to assume anything, but this is probably an invitation from sk.) The average GPA for one invitation back during sisterhood is a 3.52.
As an above comment suggests, I would just wait a year to rush if it something you truly want to do or COB in the spring when you GPA is hopefully higher. Sororities are strict about their GPA requirements and no matter how many connections you have or how great you are in other aspects, if you have a 3.0 you will be cut by almost all houses. Simple as that.

Grade drops are very strict.Girls are dropped for grades right away.We have dropped in house sisters siblings from rush for grades.Remember in sorority life the main loyalty is to the chapter, not one individual girl. (I hope ZTA drops Izzy right away save your chapter). The grades in greek chic are actually lower than what we drop for.I think my sorority says 3.2 or 3.4 and we drop below 3.7.With around 2500 girls rushing we have to narrow it down somehow and no sorority wants to be on the bottom of grades on greek report.

Don’t waste your parent’s money or your time by rushing this fall. You need to pledge the library, not a sorority. Concentrate on your classes and study, study, study your freshman year so that you have a great GPA and then rush In spring if you earned a high gpa in the fall, or wait until fall 2026. Better yet, attend a community college your freshman year. Classes will be smaller, cost will be less, and it will be to easy to get help from your instructors if needed.

We can afford it now. I just don’t understand. I know 3 girls who all had a 2.7 and went zeta, a girl who had a 2.6 and went tri delt, and a girl who had a 2.5 and went adpi. None were in house sisters. Actually, one of my friends with a 2.8 got all 12 houses back first round
