XO Coffin (serious)

by: Kaety

My grandma was SUPER into XO in college and after. She did alum things until she couldn’t drive anymore. Then she started getting confused as she got even older. Sometimes she talked about getting into a coffin during initiation and how I would do that when I was “reborn” into XO.

This is one of houses I have left, but I’m not rushing XO if there’s a coffin used in initiation. Has this really stopped or does it still go on in some chapters?

there is a death/rebirth ritual where initiates have to lie down during initiation, but I think not all chapters use a coffin (?)

I've heard they are reborn on mattresses and know people who have dropped just because the initiation is so weird

I’m a chi o at a different school but I can confirm we don’t put people in coffins, initiation is the same level of “culty” as any other srat. If you’re genuinely scared google sorority initiation a few are posted online

The first thing a xo chapter does when they get their charter is go to the local funeral home to pick out a coffin.

Yeah…no coffin. It’s not exactly something you can just prop up in the corner of the basement. If you read Chi I’d myth with Demeter, the ritual makes total sense and isn’t scary in the slightest.

just some friendly advice, if you actually find that weird and scary, you probably shouldn’t join ANY sorority because most initiations are based in part on Greek myths (which generally tend to be problematic)

Hi lol I was a chi o at a school in Michigan. We used a blow up pool to “be a coffin” in initiation lol you lay in it for maybe 3 seconds to be “born into chi o”

Basically the same at the UF chapter. Except a sheet instead of a coffin or pool because budget.

A pledge at SHSU initiated a lawsuit over the coffin. It was determined that being required to lay in a coffin is not hazing if the coffin was not closed. According to the criminal definition of hazing you would have to be confined to a small space ergo you are not confined if the casket is open.
