we didn't necessarily have a 2/3 rule but we were expected to look decent for class, and what i mean by that is that we should show up to class looking like we spent the night before at rounders. no x's on our hands, no makeup running down our faces, no tight/revealing clothing... OR if we did look like we were expected to at least not wear out letters.

this is basic stuff and my house never expected us to wear makeup or have our hair done but we needed to look decent and i think thats the expectation of most, if not all, houses on campus.

You need to have 2 of these things on point all the time. Not talking hair up in a bun or a ponytail. If you’re doing that, your outfit better be good. Since most girls wear norts or leggings and oversized shirts to class, their makeup and hair are done completely. Boxer braids are usually considered a styled look. If you’re blond and pale, that would include doing your brows and eyelashes. Most girls in these houses tan or get spray tanned.

It was more of an expectation my freshman year but not really anymore. I think they just tell the new girls to look decent now.

What is the point of needing to look good at class? I understand that sororities want to project a certain image, and looking frumpy or hungover is bad, but shouldn't members be more concerned about their actions and accomplishments rather than their looks?

sororities want us to look decent for class because we don't want members who look like they just came to class from shacking representing us around campus. if members of ABC house are walking around campus with x's on their hands and beer in their hair from beer showers the night before then people talk and that's how reputations are developed. ideally, everyone wants to look good for class... you never know who you're going to meet. but realistically, we can't always spend 2 hours getting ready for class. sororities don't expect that. but they do expect you to look somewhat presentable.

Because when you join a sorority, your actions, accomplishments, and appearance ALL reflect back on your house. Looking like you take some care in your appearance is never, ever, ever a bad thing, sorority member or not.

@active is right. I think people don’t exactly understand what rules like these address— it’s not us telling our members they need to look perfect at all times. It’s for the girls who otherwise would roll into class five days a week with knots in their hair, makeup smeared on their face, and x’s and wristbands on their hands. Face to face interactions matter the most when it comes to reputation and having girls who are a complete wreck in public can tank a house fast

Sick of people going out in public in pajamas!

Looking good isn't about the person who looks good, its about respect for other people (as well as yourself).

I think it's great sororities promote their girls looking good when they are out. We all feel better gen we aren't sour indeed by slobs.

Thanks

I don't eant to see your pjs.

In my house, we had certain rules as pledges regarding our appearance for class. Some of which included: no wet hair, no sweatpants, and no high school apparel. My house never enforced a 2/3 rule or any rule in general regarding makeup or hair. However, they did expect us to look presentable. They didn't want us to walk around looking like a slob while wearing letters because, like others mentioned above, that's how reputations begin.

To you PNMs, I think the idea of looking decent for class is more understandable once you're actually in a sorority. When you're in a sorority it's like your baby. You want it to succeed and you want it to be seen as highly in everyone else's eyes just as you see. And when you wear your letters you're proud and you don't see it as a hassle to look presentable when you're repping your letters.

My house technically has that rule, but we are not one of the more superficial houses so, as people have said above, it’s really more of an encouragement to look presentable (especially when wearing your letters).
I’ve always interpreted it as more of a ‘brush your hair and maybe throw some concealer and mascara on if you look tired’ rather than ‘you need a full beat face of makeup and perfectly done hair everyday’
