like Ole Miss and UGA sororities have male students that come to the house and help out with small stuff kind of like our staff does and they get paid. it just seems cool. i dunno

Back in the day, meals were served at table, not in the cafeteria style like today. Bowls and platters of food were set out on the tables, and after grace, we would pass them around and serve ourselves. House boys would set the tables (yes, with plates, silverware, glasses and napkins), set out the food, pour the tea, bring dessert, and clear the tables after the meal. Fraternity boys did it all and were paid. They also got to check us all out and make dates for themselves and their brothers.

Sounds pretty damn creepy to me. I'm glad we don't have that crap.

It sounds way too much like the old-old south, if you know what I mean.

Houseboys were often guys in fraternities. That's as white as it can get. Not what you're implying at all.

My mother did not go to school in the South, but at her private school with all-girls dorm, they had sit down meals with silverware and staff to help serve and clean up too.

I live in house and my boyfriend might as well be a house boy. He has changed so many tires, built so muck ikea stuff and verious things. :)
However the actual houseboy thing is weird.

We don’t have them anymore because we have full kitchen staffs— at UGA and (i think) ole miss they still have one main chef, a few kitchen staff, and the houseboys help up with the rest like dishwashing and other cleaning up. My sorority actually tried to get houseboys to help with weekend stuff but there are so many employment forms and background checks that it wasn’t worth it.

And a lot of sororities still have formal dinner where food is served plated with tablecloths and everything, mine does a few times a month. It’s fun. At UGA where meals are only for house girls I’m pretty sure they do it every night.

we have house boys at my house (i don't go to alabama but my house has a chapter there) and they're so sweet! we have a formal dinner once a week before chapter and it's so fun and the boys are so nice and love to serve us and we really appreciate it. it's not creepy or stalkerish, it's like working at a restaurant and we aren't rude to them. we have a full kitchen staff too it's just an easy way for guys to make money on campus

My house has a houseboy that we pay and he’s pretty much just a handyman. Pretty sure he’s an ato, really funny and he just helps us set up for things or fix minor house issues
