what’s the point
by: ...Is greek life even elite at this school? What’s it like when the majority of the school is involved in Greek life? Everyone dresses the same and does the same thing as any average person. What is the substance of joining a fraternity or sorority at Alabama aside from partying?

Depends on who you speak to in terms of "elitism." Some people believe being a part of the Greek system in general makes you elite, some people believe that being a part of a select few sororities and fraternities within the Greek system make you elite, while others believe being a part of the Greek system makes you no better than anyone else. At Bama you'll meet Old Row Greeks who think they're better than everyone else in the Greek system, you'll meet other Greeks that think they're better than GDIs in general, you'll meet GDIs who think they're better than Greeks, etc.
Being a part of a sorority, for me at least, is more than just partying. If you can't understand that then that's fine. As the saying goes, from the outside looking in you can't understand it, from the inside looking out you can't explain it.

speaking as a GDI who dropped from my sorority for personal reasons (nothing to do with my sorority so no trolling or bashing here) it sucks not being greek here. it honestly feels like you’re a freak and everyone looks at you like you’re some freak when you tell them you’re not in a sorority especially guys. Greek life basically controls alabama’s campus

Even though it is only 34 percent of the campus, Greek life feels much, much bigger than that. I had to drop my sorority because I could no longer keep up with the dues, and I can't help but feel completely and totally ostracized because of that. I feel really left out when I see sisters forming such deep bonds with each other. I feel like I can't be as good friends with them as they are with each other. Everyday it seems like I'm missing out on this integral college experience.

Its like any group you spend time with doing something in common...you typically become friends. Greek life has lots of activities they do together...meals, swaps, date parties, meetings, etc. This can be very important to first year students who basically step right into a very planned and organized social life and meet lots of people at these events.

That's because there are mostly GDIs. Greeks are still the minority on campus.
Anyone who disagrees should step out of their Greek world, where only people with letters exist, and look around.
That said, Greek is by far better than GDI life, IMHO.
