which chapters will drop if you don't have rec letter

by:

Which chapters will automatically drop you if you don't have a rec letter for them? How important are they? I reached out to my local alumni group in early April and only received a response for 5 chapters. I filled out self-rec forms for tri-delt and KD. Do those do anything? I am still going to try to get the other chapters, but it's getting down to the wire!

It is YOUR responsibility to get recs, not the local Panhellenic. What else have you done to get recs? Have you asked every teacher / coach / advisor if they were ina sorority? How about women from church or volunteer work or part time jobs? Your neighbors? Your friends’ moms & grandmas? Your mom & grandma’s friends?

Membership selection is private so while some chapters here do have national policies of “must have rec on file to pledge”, you aren’t going to get a list. The ones I know of with national policies range from most competitive to mid/lower competitive rushes. Other competitive houses will cut PNM’s with no recs simply because they have to cut A TON of PNM’s quickly.

No I know it’s my responsibility, but everyone says the alumni associations are the best thing to do if you don’t know many people who have been in sororities. I am from a super small town where few people even go to college let alone rush. I am getting a rec from the only teacher in my entire school district who was in a sorority.

i don’t know enough about other chapters rec letters but that last response was rude. i don’t think it’s fair to assume pnms have woman in their life who attended college, let alone joined a sorority. i know i didn’t have anyone in my life who was in a sorority. get the recs you can but remember if you go through the process you are guaranteed a house so you are gonna find a home no matter what. don’t stress! (also get off this website it sucks)

One little correction to what you said - PNM’s are only guaranteed a house if they have Pref invites and maximize their options after Pref.

You can be dropped anytime before Pref.

You can “suicide” and not list both Pref houses (if you have two invitations) and still get cut.

The only case when a PNM gets dropped from all houses is when they have terrible rep, grades, and only come in wanting a certain house and when they get dropped it shows in their attitude that they didn’t want the house they’re at. if you go through Pref and maximize your options you are guaranteed a bid somewhere. The Panhellenic council even states that if you go through rush you are NOT guaranteed a bid.

It does happen. Anywhere from 10-25 PNM’s are released from rush each year. Rarely is someone cut by all houses but it’s more common that someone has a good rush early and is left with all super competitive houses and then is cut by all the morning of sisterhood or Pref.

Not trying to scare anyone because it’s pretty rare. But I would hate for PNM’s to run around thinking they are guaranteed a bid somewhere when they are not.

I have two sisters who were dropped from rush. Both are awesome girls. Some people just do not have a good rush for whatever reason. They both ended up getting COB, but don't rely on it b/c sometimes it doesn't happen. But if you have invites on pref night and maximize your options, then you will get a bid.

Hey HM- some girls do get dropped and it isn't because of bad reputations. I personally know of a few girls that this happened too and while it was devastating, it all worked out in the end. They got COB. It doesn't happen often, but it can happen.
