Recommendation Letters
by: pnmSo how much of an effect do rec letters seriously have on rush? I am out of state and don't know any girls in the sororities or have any kind of connections, so I am just wondering how much rec letters will truly boost my chances of getting into one I am interested in.

1. There are chapters on campus that have a national policy of “must have rec on file to pledge” so you will be cut from those chapters right off the bat.
2. After the first round, many chapters need to cut hundreds of PNM’s to get down to the number of PNM’s they are allowed to invite to Philanthropy. Grades & recs are the easiest cuts to make so expect more cuts from the top houses without a rec,
3. Yes, we (rush team) read the recs. The ones that stand out are usually the strongest ones written by someone who knows you well or a negative rec alerting us to someone who doesn’t display strong character / morals. Being out of state with no ties to A&M - you NEED recs to get on the radar!!!
You almost certainly know sorority women, you just don’t know it. Have you asked all of your teachers, families you babysit for, women you know from Sunday school or your summer jobs or volunteer work? Have you asked your friends’ mother’s & grandmothers, or your mom and grandmas’ friends? You don’t have to find an Aggie Kappa or Aggie DZ to write your rec. Any alumna from any Kappa or DZ chapter can write one. Quick though- we’re already receiving tons of recs. You have just about 2 weeks to pull this together so we can receive by Aug 1.

So the first commenter is half right. Recs are important because if you don’t have at least one, chapters will likely cut the girls without a rec in the first round because they have to cut ~somebody~. The only way out of this (which it’s a slim chance) would be if you score high after the chapters score the videos y’all submit and a chapter feels like they must have you.
However, recs are simply just an easy cutting mechanism. I can’t speak for the other woman’s chapter, but I know we don’t read a single one we get, it’s not that deep. Most of the time the women who write y’all recommendations don’t even know you so what would be the point in reading the same info we could find on your resume?
I suggest trying to get at least ONE for every chapter, 2 if you really wanna stand out. But most importantly remember to just be yourself. We’ve all been in your shoes before and it’s super hard to keep an open mind but I promise it’s the best advice anybody will give you, so don’t stress too hard about the recs thing, you’re gonna end up where you should be.

Yes, it’s true that you need rec letters. It’s just a very easy way to get cut early because so many houses have to cut for something. I agree with above. Have your mom or any other ladies in your family post to social media that you are going through recruitment and that you need rec letters.

From my experience, I don’t think missing a few rec letters made a huge difference. I tried my best to secure some, but in the end I think I only got maybe 5? I barely had any connections going into recruitment, and my parents weren’t (and still aren’t) thrilled about Greek Life, so there wasn’t much help from my mom! Also, my local alumnae association was EXTREMELY unhelpful.
However, I still ended up in one of my top houses during recruitment and made some awesome friends! I didn’t have a rec letter for the chapter I ended up in either. So, even though it’s important to have rec letters (to a certain extent), I really wouldn’t stress if your unable to secure some for a few chapters. Just do your best and enjoy your summer!

You don't read the letters? What if one says do not offer a bid to this girl b/c she has a horrible rep?? Just curious. We've received letters like that before.
