What defines a “top tier house”
by: ?Because people continue to post unnecessary ranks and biased opinions of what they think of houses they aren’t even in, I would like to ask what exactly qualifies someone to be labeled as a “top house”? Maybe reading peoples different perspectives will allow us to understand that there are more important things than subjective, baseless opinions, and that we all value different things as opposed to defining one house as better than another.

I think for the purpose of this site, people think houses like DDD and Kappa are “top” because historically they have had really high returns after day 1. This means they have to make SIGNIFICANT cuts so lots of girls don’t ever go beyond day one to these houses, it makes it feel very exclusive. However, I don’t REALLY think that in and of itself should make a house “top.” There are so many great girls that are cut day one from these houses for really arbitrary reasons, and some of it is just sheer LUCK and has nothing to do w/ how great, cute, popular, smart, involved, etc. a girl might be. So long story short, these ranks are cr&p and people should focus more on the involvement on campus, social calendar, philanthropy, and friendships when judging whether a house is “top.”

Couldn’t have answered this better. I’m in one of the “exclusive” houses you mentioned & this is spot on. Last year we had to cut about half the girls after day 1. You cannot take it personally b/c it just is what it is & beyond our control. I sometimes wonder how I even got here when I saw the numbers last year. SO MANY awesome girls were cut. But that just means they landed somewhere else, which is why our Pan chapters are all great in their own way.
