questions about sororities

by:

I’ve got a couple questions about sorities rush and all that jazz

What is formal rush like what happens on each day, what are you supposed to wear, what should/ shouldn’t you do

I’m gonna major in engineering and I wanna be involved in clubs and maybe a club sport with adding being in a sorority on top of all that be too much

What do you love/ hate the most about being in a sorority

Are there any sororities that i should avoid

What is the general opinion of each sorority

Do people judge you at A&M for being in a sorority

If you have any additional tips/ info please let me know
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions

Some sororities require you to join another org! Greek life is not as huge here so you wouldn’t feel left out at all

You will just have to see What sorority you end up in requires. I wanted to join a club sport but knew I couldn’t juggle it so I chose my sorority over it. There are plenty of girls that are on the actual ncaa teams that are in sororities though so it’s possible to juggle both.

When it comes to recruitment you can find what to wear online and what all the days are. A&M has an online slideshow that I think they will send you over the summer once you register. You can also look into your local Panhellenic council and see if they have anything on their website. My home town had gatherings leading up to recruitment to help us ask questions and talk to people first hand that were alums.

The best thing you can do during recruitment is be yourself and trust the process. As cheesy as that sounds everyone ends up where they are supposed to be. I never thought I would be in the sorority that I’m in and I can honestly say that the process works.

1. formal rush is about a week long with each day being a different round. As the week goes on you learn different things about each sorority and you get invited back to a few through a mutual voting process. it ends with the last round called preference where you select one sorority and the next day (bid day) you receive which house you got. The rounds are go greek, sisterhood, philanthropy, and pref

2. You can be involved in other things on top of a sorority, but you might find it overwhelming being an engineering major and adjusting to college. some people choose to rush as a sophomore once they're more adjusted to college life

3. I absolutely love my sorority! its been so rewarding to meet so many amazing young women and the events/ parties/mixers are so much fun!! The only thing I'd ay I dislike about it would be certain mandatory events that can sometimes get in the way of studying

4. You shouldn't "avoid" any sororities, but there might be some that you come to learn you don't fit in much with. each sorority here has a "label" and during rush you'll see into a little more on each one's personality

5. read some of the previous posts about the general characteristics of each. some are pretty accurate generalizations, but don't let this site be the reason you do/dont want certain houses. You will be proven completely wrong at recruitment because (obviously) not everything on here is accurate

6. Usually no one here cares if you're in a sorority or not. You can be involved in plenty of other things and still be "cool," and you can still be in a sorority and be "weird". It all really depends on your own personality. But no one here really judges or cares if you're in one.

7. Most important tip that you'll hear SO much: BE YOURSELF :) if you feel like you have to "pretend" to be a different person to fit into a house, then that is NOT the place for you. Your future sisters will love you for who you are

1) look up “TAMU issuu 2018” and you should get a helpful guide on formal recruitment. A lot better than anything you will find on GR. You should have a list of topics to talk about beforehand. Memorize it and use one of the topics when there’s an awkward silence, but don’t use it as a script . You should show interest (ex: ask about their philanthropy). You shouldn’t discuss stuff like politics, religion, romance, alcohol, etc
2) Defintiely express your concerns about time management with the sorority. Do it either when they ask “do you have any questions?” or when they ask what you want to do outside of Greek life. Maybe hold off on extra clubs until your second semester or later so that you have had time to figure out how to balance between Greek life & academics.
3) I love the support system & the fact that I have a pretty busy schedule. I don’t like how expensive it is or the fact that you get fined over the tiniest things.
4) Once you go to formal recruitment, if a sorority gives you a cliquey vibe, it’s prohably best that you don’t join them. If they are cliquey when they’re supposed to be fake & nice to everyone, imagine how they are when they’re no longer required to put on an act. Exactly which ones are cliquey depend on the person. I thought one sorority was cliquey, but two people from my recruitment group received a bid from that sorority & at least one seems really happy with her sorority, so...
5) Generalizations are just stereotypes. If you hear “all the XYZs are a bunch of fakes”, it may be true of some members, but other members may not match the stereotype at all. Ignore all these “tiers” and things that you see on greekrank. Some rankings & such may be truthful, but many are false, and there’s no way to tell the difference unless you’re in the house that they’re talking about. Go in with an open mind & trust your instincts
6) Whether or not you rush is your choice & your choice only.
7) I’ve pretty much said it already, but: go in with an open mind, trust your instinct, and trust the system/process. Also pay attention to whether or not you click with the girls more than whether or not they have a (nice) house.

I don’t even go here but I’m bored & was trying to be helpful. I apologize if I gave out any false information or if I made any spelling and grammar mistakes
