rushing as a sophomore transfer from blinn
by: !!I'm rushing this fall as a sophomore transfer from Blinn. I'm really excited to go through recruitment but I'm concerned I'll get cut from houses strictly because I'm a sophomore. I have a 3.6 GPA and know a couple girls in several houses. Will I cut from "top tier" sororities just because I'm not a freshman or will every sorority give me a chance??

That upper class an quota is optional. Sororities don't have to use it or use all of it. Many higher tiers don't utilize it if at all.

Being a sophmore won't be a problem. It's the being a Blinn transfer that will. You had a 3.6 taking classes as Blinn? That's a bit different than taking classes at A&M and getting a 3.6. Top tier sororities will take you only if you know actives really well. Otherwise... your best hope might be Zeta, but if they want to improve their grade rankings and take only girls with good GPAs this year... ouch.

Each house has a freshman and sophmore quota. But each pledge class is allowed to take only so many pledges. It's depends mostly on nationals. So this past year some houses took 80 or so women while some took close to 100. Being a sophmore won't hurt you, in most cases it'll only help because it's less competitive.

That's not how quota works at all. Those who took more of the baseline quota got quota additions because of the RFM system we use to place all PNMs who maximize their options. Quota is roughly the number of PNMs who attend at least one pref party divided by the number of sororities. Everyone gets the same quota.

I guess you did not know that maximizing your options is no longer a thing at a&m. No girl is garunteed a bid anymore and the new pledges will never hear "maximize your options" like we have in the past because they nighter get cut entirely. Even if they maximize. Also nationals 100% has a say in how many girls can be taken. That is why some houses have 100 people in a pledge class and some have 80.

1) A bid is no longer guaranteed as long as you maximize your options, BUT we have several sororities who are not close to quota, so it's very unlikely that a PNM will be entirely bidless.
2) Nationals does not set the number of girls who get bids on bid day. Each university's Panhellenic does. You have quota, and then you have quota additions. QAs are decided in a number of ways, some being that Panhellenic gives sororities with lower numbers more girls, and some are because so many girls wanted them at pref. It's just math.

I thought that if you maximized your options on pref night, you were guaranteed a bid. How has this changed?

so is quota different for every house or does each house require the same amount of freshman and sophomores in their pledge class??
