Tradition of Whiteness in Frats? Confused

Someone here mentioned that some frats have a tradition of being white. Which I understand means they have been historically white. But why is that considered a "tradition"? Seriously asking this? I can understand a tradition of being sporty or being from a certain region of the world or being urban/cosmopolitan but wtf is meant by a tradition of white skin? What kind of cultural things are unique to white skin?
