transfer rushing

by: transfer

I am going in the fall as a sophomore but I just turned 19. Is it harder to get a bid from a house if you're not a freshmen?

Yes, a lot harder.

Keep your options open.

Why is it harder? What do they look for in transfers?

This freaks me out because I am transferring too. I have a great resume, lots of recs, great personality, southern, and very put together. I didn't realize it would be harder to rush though....

Sororities are looking for girls who will be dues paying members for 4 years. Their budgets rely on it.

If they can only count of 3 years worth of dues from you, a freshman will look better on paper.

Also, you completely hang out with your pledge class. All the freshmen will be in the dorms. For many of the sororities, sophomores also live together either in the dorms or in a designated apartment complex. If you are not a freshman going in, you will still be a member of the "freshman" class. As a transfer, you might not fit in as well.

So should I not even rush?

Of course you should! Nothing ventured nothing gained!

Don't give up something you want just because it might be hard or your choices might be limited! If you don't really care about being in a sorority, then don't go through all this effort. But if this is something you really want, then go for it. Hit the ground running. Finish up anything you need to finish up and get all your recs in. It will be a lot more challenging for you since you are a transfer, but it isn't impossible. It happens! Don't worry about this too much because then you'll be even more nervous during rush. Be confident and outgoing. If a house likes you they aren't going to cut you just because you're a transfer. If they're kind of on the fence about you, they'll probably cut you. But don't drop out if you really want this. Just go into it with a really open mind. You will most likely get dropped by a lot of houses right off the bat. You won't have as many options as some of the freshmen. Just be happy with what you get and make the most out of it! Also, Alpha Phi will be a great option for transfers, if that's something that's for you. It's not for everyone, and it's a lot of effort, but it could be a great experience. Consider all your options and keep a really open mind! These people aren't trying to scare you, they're just warning you. It's a challenge, but you can do it.

I am a strong believer that anything can happen. There is no formula really to to get a bid. You have a shot at any house you connect with during rush week. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. It will be harder, but you won't be alone, and certainly has been done before. Everyone is feeling what you are feeling. Just put your best foot forward and get those recs in if you haven't. Best of luck to you!

I have put a lot into it already and it is something I want very badly! Why is Alpha Phi a good option? I am not familiar with them.

I don't know you personally, so I don't know if it's actually a good option for you or not. But new colonies need transfer students so the whole sorority isn't full of freshmen. It may not be for you, but if things don't end up working the way you hope they will during formal recruitment, I think you should really consider it. I really hope that formal recruitment does work out the way you're hoping. I bet you have put a lot into it and that it is something that you want very badly. But being a transfer student makes this a lot harder. They are a great sorority with lots of strong chapters and they are getting a little stronger in the south. They will be bad here for a while, but you could be a part of that and help grow the chapter to be a great one, if it's for you. You can google them and get more information. But it doesn't really matter if you are familiar with them or not, you would learn about them if you joined their sorority. I wasn't saying that that's your only option, because it isn't. I was just saying that you need to keep your options open. Every PNM, even a freshmen with a 4.0 who was homecoming queen, needs to keep their options open. Your recruitment could go very well, and I hope it does. Just don't look forward to a flawless recruitment because you might be disappointed. It sucks, but it's the truth!

ADPi would be great too. Their house is going to be beautiful ! They need nice girls with good grades and reputations to help them move up quicker .

Would you need recs for those houses still?

Alpha pi will need freshmen and sophomores and juniors, etc. starting out as an new colony, they will be relying on upperclassmen to help lead the way for the freshman class. Transfers will be very desirable to them! It is for this reason that there will not be an upperclass quota during formal.

I rushed the same year that ADPi colonized. We had 3 transfers in my pledge class. Not many, but a few!
