top houses

Let's put it this way. When you were looking at colleges, you researched which ones were the best for you. Some chose Ole Miss because of their academics, others for the beauty of the campus, others for the nightlight. But you asked and researched. Some chose Ole Miss because their parents came here and they were raised wanting to come here.
Next, after you decided on Ole Miss, you researched dorms. Most girls who rush want to live in Martin, because they think it is filled with cool girls who will all be rushing along with them. You asked which was best for you and chose.
Next, you had to decide on classes and teachers. Again you asked questions and studied evaluations to find the best teachers for you.
Sororities are much the same. We ask questions, we research, we follow in our mothers footsteps, etc. Historically XO, KD, and DDD have been the top sororities on campus. Year after year, they have their pick of the top PNM's. That's not really going to change. They have alumni that pay lots of money, their parties are top notch & over the top. And, I'm not just talking about rush.
Girls want to be in the "Popular" sororities. Yes, it's shallow, but true for most of us.
However.... this is Ole Miss! All of our sororities are special!

Nice dissertation on your rush experience but you did not answer the question. I would also like to know why XO and DDD are considered top houses. What qualities and characteristics do they possess that make them top?

Once you are on campus and have gone through rush, you can answer for yourself!
no one on here can tell you what makes each house special.

A top tier girl can't answer this question without everybody jumping in trying to discredit her.
A middle or bottom house won't answer because they would rather die than say another house is better than theirs.
Just wait until you are on campus and go through rush. You can answer your own questions.

Okay, I'm in a middle tier house and I will agree with what the 1st poster said. DISCLAIMER: I am in love with my sorority and I couldn't imagine being in a different one. Of course I think my house put on a fabulous rush, but I can say that KD had the best rush out of every single sorority on campus. They may have their Bid List made before rush starts, but they make every single girl that comes through feel special. Yes, it's probably fake, but who cares? Every PNM wants to feel special and KD makes you feel special. So what makes Top Tier, Top Tier? Well honestly if you look at when they were founded, the three top houses were founded before the others(with the exception of Phi Mu)
Chi Omega: 1899
Delta Delta Delta: 1904
Phi Mu: 1926
Kappa Delta: 1927
Delta Gamma: 1927
Kappa Kappa Gamma: 1942
Pi Beta Phi: 1962
Alpha Omicron Pi: 1958
Kappa Alpha Theta: 1979
Alpha Delta Pi: 2013
So obviously the top tier have much more of an alumni backing than the other houses. Going into rush, I knew I liked my current house and KD. I was dying to be in one of them. I knew I would not fit in at Chi O. I didn't know an active, but I knew lots of alumni and I just did not feel comfortable there during rush. I knew several Tri-Delt actives and I liked the idea of being a Tri-Delt. Their rush was wishy-washy. First day was not good, second day was better, and skit was their best day. I just didn't feel "at home" there. The girls in the top tier houses are very secure with themselves (cont.)

I did not have a "love affair" with KD. I said they put on the best rush. To answer your question, I didn't know anyone personally and I didn't feel as comfortable. When I thought, "who would I run home to on bid day at KD?" I couldn't answer my question. I'm sure I could have made friends, but where I'm at now, I ran to my big and grandbig. I went where I felt comfortable and most wanted. And to be honest, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I completely agree with this post 100%. I am also in a middle tier and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else, and I went to KD all the way to pref and will agree that they put on the best rush every single round. But when it came to choosing between them and my house I just felt more comfortable at my house, and that's how it should be. You should want to be somewhere you feel at home and not just pick the house that your parents want you to be in or whose letters you most want to put on the back of your car. Rush is about you and if you focus on superficial things you're only hurting yourself in the end.

That's exactly what makes them top houses. At Ole Miss, these things are all that matter. In my opinion, the middle houses (kappa, phi mu, aopi, pi phi) all had the best and most genuine rush/members as a whole. However, they lack the tradition at ole miss and suffer in ranks because of it.

Middle tier girls are NOT better than top tier girls! Get over yourself!
Top sororities are top for way more reasons than tradition!
Maybe traditions gets them better girls, but the fact that they get better girls is what makes them top.
Pnm's can go through rush and see for themselves. They don't need you telling them what houses to chose.

I went through rush two years ago. We went from 9 houses to 6 houses to 3 houses to 1. (It's different now) Because I was your typical "shallow" PNM, I put all three top and all three middle houses down after the first round. I didn't want anything to do with the less popular houses. I know, I know, shallow!
I didn't really care about sisterhood or philanthropies or who my sisters were going to be, I just wanted in a popular house.
To be honest, there are girls in every house that I am friends with and girls that I love!
My best advise is to follow your heart and not to listen to tent talk. You will end up exactly where you are supposed to be!
Be be even more honest, PNM's really don't have any say so in houses. Remember above when I said that I only put the top 6 down. Well, two of those houses dropped me after first round and 2 that I cut moved up. The next day, my second favorite house dropped me.
you adjust your expectations as rush goes on.
