legacy

by: pnm2015

I am not a legacy anywhere. Will that hurt me in the end? Does being a legacy give you a huge advantage in rush? Thanks guys! So excited to come to Ole Miss in the fall!

There are houses like xo who protect their legacies and others like DG and KD who really don't care about legacies. For the most part being a legacy won't hurt OR help you!

I think being a legacy at KD hurts you more than it helps you. If you are a legacy who is invited to pref you have to be on the first bid list. If the chapter likes you, but doesn't like you enough to put you on their first bid list, they have to cut you before pref. A non-legacy in the same situation might get invited to pref and put somewhere on the second bid list. She could get a bid, depending on how bids matched for the first bid list, but the legacy won't because they had to cut her. I think other groups might also cut you early because you are someone else's legacy and not worth wasting a precious invite on when you are likely to go somewhere else. My advice to people is usually to NOT list legacy status.

Legacies really don't matter anymore. Being a legacy may give you a little bit of attention from the sorority before rush, which may be a bad thing. But being a legacy will not secure you a bid. You may even be dropped by that house after the first day.

Whoever said KD and DG don't care about their legacies is lying. Houses WANT their legacies. But they also want girls who are a good fit for their house. Say you have a good legacy pnm but an amazing non-legacy pnm. If you already have a decent amount of amazing legacies coming back for the next round. Taking the amazing non-legacy over the good legacy would be the better option. A house cannot take all of their legacy pnm. A lot of them aren't good fits for the house even if every woman in their family has been a part of that sorority. Legacy status doesn't guarantee you a bid.

Some houses take their legacies very seriously and for others they don't really care too much. Nationals has a lot of influence on this. For example, KD cut some legacies after the first round because they knew they didn't want them. Most of DDD's new pledge class is made up of girls who have older friends in the house, so legacies aren't as important there either. On the other end, AOPi is required to ask legacies back and unless the girl just doesn't want to be there, she is almost guaranteed a bid. XO has a lot of legacies from this specific chapter so they also take them seriously as well. Kappa's nationals are trying to have more influence on this chapter, so they will probably be taking legacies more seriously in the next few years.
