football + rush

by: Rebs

I'm an incoming freshman from Dallas and I am planning to be a preferred walk-on at Quarterback on the football team (I'm a hair too short and white for most D1 scholarships.) In addition to the possibility of "playing" football I would like to rush, particularly Sigma Chi. My Dad and my uncle are both Sigs (Texas Tech chapter) and I have heard great things about the Ole Miss chapter. My question is what is the typical process for athletes rushing? And secondly will being out of state hurt me too much during rush? I know this is a bad place to ask this question but it's just preliminary and my only regular contacts at Ole Miss are football coaches; not the right people to ask.

I can't answer the part about being an athlete and rushing too well but here's what I do know: pledgeship is time consuming and demanding, as is football. These two commitments will interfere with one another a good bit. But I'm sure your future fraternity will understand and cut you some slack. The manning's were sigma nus so it can be done. As for the out of state part, sigma chi is great here and is more accepting of oos kids. KA and sigma nu are known to take mississippi boys. You're a legacy and from Dallas so that should be an advantage.

The current coaching staff really really discourages joining a fraternity. REALLY discourages, meaning their players generally do not rush. The coaches know that the time demands of both activities will make it impossible to do both well. Pledging a fraternity can also get you in a lot of trouble that the team does NOT permit. The coaches do not want any conflicts. If you join a fraternity, you seriously jeopardize any chance of making the football team. You will have to choose.

And please drop the "too white" to play football bulls#it.

From personal experience, fraternities don't give a damn if you're a "preferred" walk-on. They know most walk-ons end up dropping football anyway. I still got a top tier house, but only because I made an effort to make connections

I didn't mean to throw the word preferred in there to be pretentious, only to differentiate that I'm not just coming in off the street like Rudy. I appreciate all the input.

They want Miss boys! They are not interested in grades or athletes! Just a good ole boy that doesn't make them feel inferior!
