curious about connections

So a girl from my hs joined a top tier sorority at ole miss this year. I know "all houses are great" but this one is exclusive. We've talked about rush since I'm coming to ole miss next year and she says she had zero connections with this sorority and only one rec letter. I know her gpa and resume was pretty average. We aren't from Ms so getting a bid to this house is a pretty big deal since she didn't know anyone in it at all. I know the alumni have like lists of PNM they like.. So how did she get a bid? Does this happen a lot and can it happen to me?
