rush for out of state
by: NorthernGirlWhat is rush like for out of state girls? Like WAY out of state - NY? Is there a real disadvantage to not being from the south? I visited Ole Miss and hope to attend next year. Went to a football game and just loved everything about the school. I've already read up on recs and will be working on that over the summer. Thanks!

It's not out of state that necessarily is going to hurt you because like other people said, there are tons of Atlanta and Birmingham and other OOS girls in all chapters. To some degree it seems like it's that they only take girls from the south but that's who mostly goes to Ole Miss: Mississippi and other Southerners. There aren't a ton of Idaho and Washington state kids at Ole Miss. So that's who is actives in the chapters pushing for the people they know from back home. It's really about connections. The girls from Nashville or wherever have connections to Ole Miss. Their mom and dad went there or they have girls from their high school who went there and are actives in good houses. They aren't unknown. It's not that the houses won't think you might be a good fit but there are only a limited number of bids and those girls with connections are going to be the ones that get fought for. If you can put aside your preconceived notions and be open you will 100% get a bid to a house at Ole Miss. And the top four might take you. You never know but it's not likely and you should be prepared.

I was out of state too, coming from Maryland, the “top” houses MAY cut you. I know plenty of Northern and West Coast girls who ended up in the top houses. However, you have a better shot at AOPI, ADPI, Pi Phi ,Pi mu and KKG. As long as you have good conversations and let your personality stand out, I feel as if location doesn’t matter during rush, I know others will disagree but location shouldn’t matter :)

Rush at ole miss is intense for everyone going through it. I am from out of state and had two top houses at pref and I didn’t know anyone when I was going through, so it is definitely possible for you to get a good house. Don’t let being out of state discourage you. Although it is tougher for OOS girls, it is not impossible. Have a positive attitude through it all and you will be fine. We have a very strong Greek life so wherever you end up will be great!

No, you will not get cut. You need to come in prepared to give every house a chance just like you want them to get to know you. Get your letters in and make sure your social media is clean. The girls with the happiest rushes are psychologically prepared for the experience.
