rush for out of state

by: NorthernGirl

What is rush like for out of state girls? Like WAY out of state - NY? Is there a real disadvantage to not being from the south? I visited Ole Miss and hope to attend next year. Went to a football game and just loved everything about the school. I've already read up on recs and will be working on that over the summer. Thanks!

The top 3 probably will cut you, but the others will take you as long as you have all the other criteria.

And DG and maybe Kappa. You have a good chance in Phi Mu, AOPi, Pi Phi, Theta, and ADPi.

if you go into rush and let your personality shine and then accept your bid you'll end up happy wherever you join. the sororities here are all great! just make sure you work on the things you can work on right now.

Unless you are a grade or reputation risk, you should find a home in a great sorority. Ole Miss is recruiting students from all over the country and our sororities are the most diversified in the nation. Keep your options open and don't single out just one or two. Finding a sorority shouldn't be a popularity contest. Go with the house YOU feel comfortable in!

the top houses will cut you but you wont find a real sisterhood there anyways. as long as your grades/rep is good youll be fine!

This is ridiculous. Every house on campus has sisterhood. Even KD/XO/DDD. Just because it's harder to get into those three doesn't mean they don't love their sisters.

if XO/DDD/KD all have great sisterhood then why do so many of their actives tell their friends in other sororities that they would drop if it weren't for the perks that come with the reputation? the only one that may be excluded from this is XO

Honestly, the top four houses will most likely cut you. Sorry, but that's the truth. All 4 cut me during rush and I was from NJ.

This gets old. Quit trying to rank something that has no subjective means of quantifying. It is all opionions. You would not want to be in a group that cuts before they even know you anyway.

"You wouldn't want to be in a group that cuts before they even know you"??? How can a few hundred girls "get to know" over 1200 girls in 20 minutes? Your logic is off. Obviously if they don't already know you prior to the first round of parties, you don't stand much of a chance. Almost all the the sororities start putting their lists together in the spring. They fine tune them in the summer, and start cutting before the first party even takes place. The top sororities have to cut 60% of the PNM after the first round. Who do you think get cut first? The girls they don't already know!!!!!

That is what your resume is for to help if you are from out of state. If you have excellent grades excellent activities and leadership skills then they should make the effort to check you out. You spoke the truth most of the top tier cut because they don't bother to get to know you because they have no say so at all. That is why DDD AND xO and DG don't even have bid sessions. The members get no say only the alumni and rush committee so you are right unless you have a connection give it up you don't have a chance and they don't care.

i do have to agree on this, rush is significantly harder for OOS women, as southern women going through rush have the advantage of ties to certain houses and high profile recommendations from alum of a specific house on the ole miss campus. For some reasons, whether it be tradition or just the concept of southern pride, sorority row houses and XO are very southern based. That doesn’t mean you’ll immediately get cut, but you will have to be an Ole Miss legacy or multiple time legacy to be a part of them. Rush is an emotional time that takes a lot out of you, especially if you’re a northern girl who doesn’t have many in-house ties. But, in the end, the house that bids you WANTS you to be a part of their sisterhood and you will get a bid... coming from a northern girl, i wouldn’t get too hung up on social status of houses anyway. that concept deteriorates after freshman year anyway.
