legacy but oos & no connections

by: leg

I am from far OOS and have no connections at any of the houses at Ole Miss. I am a legacy to two houses, one top tier and one upper middle tier. Will being a legacy help me much given my legacy connections didn't go to Ole Miss? I have top grades and am involved.

sorry. no. won't make a bit of difference. legacy matters but connections matter more. everybody is homecoming queen or valedictorian from somewhere it seems. unless it's from Jackson Prep or MRA or Hutcheson, you don't have a shot at the tip top houses.

OOS legacies may have a better chance at KKG and Phi Mu. Recs are very important in these houses- if you are a legacy make it known early.

Toughest - XO (better be an OM legacy or you can forget it), DDD and KD. Legacies are not guaranteed any spot here as connections are the most important.

Legacies also must remember that they have to be a fit for the sorority. PNM's need to remember that you will only be happy if you keep an open mind and consider all of the sororities. You will end up where you belong! Good luck!

(1) grades, activities mean pretty much nothing. this isn't an college application, it's a sorority application. and to be honest, in most houses (At least top houses) your application doesn't even get looked at. If you aren't an ole miss legacy, it's thrown away.

(2) as far as ole miss legacy, it's required for top houses only. your legacy status will help a bit in the mid tier house, but without it being a ole miss legacy it's no guarantee

mid tier is very possible if you click with a few girls and they push for you. top tier is slim to none.

Here's something else to know: Don't be shocked when you're dropped from all top tier after first round and then by some top tier after 2nd or 3rd round. Every year I see girls with no connections who thought they'd make top or mid tier, but didn't realize that for most of those houses, it's all about connections.

You possibly have a shot at mid-tier if you connect with a lot of girls; most opportunities will be with lower tier houses (which have great girls). I say this so you are prepared for what rush at OM is really like.

Also, just because you're a legacy to a house doesn't mean that you're a fit for them OR that they're a fit for you. Every PNM needs to be open to all houses, but especially if you come from far away with no connections. Great girls in every house, you can find a home if you are open and really want it.

Legacy means nothing to KD and DDD, unless it's an Ole Miss legacy connection (I don't think these two even realize they're part of a National Organization). It does seem to mean something to Chi-O but there's so many Ole Miss legacies coming in each year it's hard for OOS to find an spot. You got a 50/50 shot as a DG legacy with a good resume. Phi Mu and Kappa will give legacies a reasonable chance. Pi Phi and AOPi give their legacies thoughtful consideration. You shouldn't have any problems with ADPi as a legacy. I really don't know about Alpha Phi - I honestly don't know any.

Thanks everyone for the responses. The most important thing to me is to find the house where I fit in the best and feel most comfortable. I definitely don't expect to end up in a "top" house and that's fine by me. It would be cool to end up in the same house as my mom or my sister, but I don't have any expectations that will happen.
