out of state rush

by: worried

I am thinking about attending Ole Miss in the fall and I would like to rush. I am from North Carolina and I have no ties to any sorority. What would penalize me from getting a bid? What GPA would penalize my chances? I know nothing about the process of recruitment. What would I need to to prepare myself to get the best chance for recruitment? What stuff do I bring? Thanks for the help.

Well, first off, have a realistic picture of Ole Miss rush. Unless you are a legacy your chances of a top house is slim to none. If you can't accept that, please go else where. You don't want to know how many of the cheerleaders/prom queens/hottest girl at my school/i have a range rover comes to ole miss and get a wake up call when they realize rush is legacy based here.

Now, I'd try to connect with an active from NC that goes here, I know an kappa, aoii and aphi from NC. If you connect with an active and they really pull for you, you should get mid tier easy. Or if you are really friendly when you get here and impress houses, then a mid tier is very possible.

If not, it'd be bottom tier. Just make a decent offer, ya know like get dress, try to have convos, act nice, etc., you should get a bid easily to any bottom tier. They usually extend bids to anyone that's not a red flag (red flags are rare).

Hello! You will want to come in with at least a 3.0 GPA to get a bid from every house that I know of. Obviously, if you have reasons that your grades are lower (such as death of parent or learning difference), then you will want to have your recommenders (who write letters on your behalf) explain that. Some sororities will consider special cases if the PNM is otherwise impressive. So keep your grades up and be ready to make an effort with every house. I am affiliated with a house considered easier to get into and it's surprising how many PNMs are still cut for reasons other than grades or reputation risks. You sound like a very nice person, but every year there are a few snobby girls who treat certain houses with disdain and they won't be invited back. We also don't hesitate to pass along names of insufferable or rude PNMs to our friends in other houses. Ole Miss rush is competitive, but I've really enjoyed being a sister. Good luck!

P.S. Don't be worried. You have plenty of time to prepare for rush!

One thing you can start now is learning about letters of recommendation from sorority women and start finding women who will write letters for you. I started by asking my mother's friends, my friends' parents, and my teachers. Enlist your parents to help you find women willing to write on your behalf. They need to belong to one of the sororities we have here. They can have gone to college anywhere, but certain chapters will be impressed if you find recommenders from Ole Miss. However, that might be ridiculously hard -- just get letters from alumnae. I bet you will not find this that hard in NC.

The houses here are ADPi,AOII, Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Tri-Delta, Phi Mu, Kappa Delta, Delta Gamma, Pi Phi, and Kappa Kappa Gamma.

There are plenty of NC girls here at OM in all the sororities. Do you know any already? That would help you the most- having someone in the house pulling for you. Secondly, get those RECS. The best recs are from alumnae of OM sororites but if you can't pull that off, find some from people who actually know you or your family. I find random recommenders don't know you and your family as well and just "fill in the blanks". Ask your high school friends if their Moms were in sororities and where. There are also local alumnae boards for sororities. Remember to not come in with ANY expectations at OM. It is by far the toughest recruitment in the nation. All the girls are smart, beautiful, rich, etc. If you keep an open mind, you will land where you belong. Good luck!

You will be fine. Try and meet some of the many NC girls that are here this spring and summer.I am from NC and have had a great experience at OM.. You will love it. Just come with an open mind and don’t listen to the negative trolls on GR. Good luck to you.
