is more than one rec too extra?

by: UM'23

I'm also going to be a freshman next year, and I'm wondering if it helps to have more than one rec for each sorority? Like the last post, just want to be as prepared as possible and make sure I've done everything right. Thanks for any advice!

No, more than one letter is not too much. Good luck and keep an open mind. That seems to determine a happy outcome on bid day!

Having more than one rec doesn't help you or give you an advantage at any house.

And yes if you have a lot, it makes it look like you just got random ones not ones from people that actually know you.

Instead you should focus on getting one really good one for each house from people that actually know you and preferably have connections at ole miss. That is more important than having 5 random recs

Recs don't matter.... all about who you know and who you know that someone in the house does not like.

FALSE
"Having more than one rec doesn't help you or give you an advantage at any house." Yes they do, especially if they are good recs from well know alums of the chapter.

"Recs don't matter." They do matter, but so do in house connections.

TRUE
"Recs do matter. Get at least two." Truth is some people say they will write you a rec and they don't or they forget. You should aim for three really good recs.

Good recs are important. Get a rec from someone who is going to take the time to honestly tell the chapter about you and not just check the boxes and attach your resume.

Get recs from Ole Miss connections. Random recs look - random...

Letters of support are important too. Truth is they may not even get read, but we take note of who got them and who wrote them!

Thank your rec writers and letter writers! It takes valuable time to write a good rec and/or letter. Send them a small token of appreciation a week or two after you've given them your packet. It is just good manners AND it serves to 'gently remind' them to actually write your rec!!

Tacky rec folders get noticed. It's not necessary to have elaborate folders BUT if you send one it better look good or it will be noted. Choose your fonts and colors wisely!

Save the cheap railroad, open field, stairwell photos for your Aunt Pam. Cute candid photos go over so much better than cheesy contrived poses.

TRUE & FALSE
"Recs don't matter.... all about who you know and who you know that someone in the house does not like." Recs DO matter but so do in house connections! And true, one bad in house connection can get you cut.

Rush is so fun and getting ready for it can be fun too especially if you're well prepared! PanLove!

What is a rec folder? Recs come directly from alumnae, so what is a rec folder?

Some girls put all their information in a folder or rec packet to give to alums writing recs. They are usually color coordinated with the PNMs name on the front. They include resume, photos, transcript, mailing envelopes (including postage), etc. It keeps everything all together for your rec writer. Folders can easily be put together by the PNM, but there are plenty of Etsy shops and websites that offer the service too.

Most (but not all) sororities prefer online recs so they never even see the folders, but some alum groups send the folders to the chapters after submitting recs on line. Rec folders or packets are very nice and make writing recs easy for the rec writer, but they are NOT 100% necessary and certainly not mandatory.

If you're dealing with a bunch of the old Mississippi Mamas you might need those color coordinated folders. Might check and see if your grandma has one of those old typewriters. If you're dealing with women who used their college education for a business or professional career you will be okay with using technology.

PNMs, do what you want with your rec folders and information.... Just get use to bitterness, pettiness, and downright jealousy from girls who didn't have cute folders or have the connections that Ole Miss requires. Those girls will be terribly negative about recs, rush, clothes, parties, dorm décor - basically anything that they felt like they didn't have. It's really sad actually.

@sad but true is unfortunately right. Girls can be so freaking mean to each other and WHY??? Let's all do our own thing and support each other! It's just not that hard!!

You do you! Hotty Toddy!!

Absolutely! The old ladies like those color coordinated folders! Forget GPA, community and school involvement, and leadership skills - just worry about who you know and those folders!
