legit question
by: New PNMI’m from OOS so I probably won’t get in a top house. I get it. But why such hating on Theta, ADPi and alpha phi? What makes them bottom? Where I’m from those are “Top”. I have good grade and extra curricular and I’m social and well connected at home and could probably be in a top House at my state school. So I’m just wondering is it worth rushing? Or will i just not fit in?

Harsh. I am in a "top tier" and like it, but I also have friends in "bottom tier' who are JUST AS HAPPY AS I AM with their sorority. And I have friends in "top tier" who aren't happy. It's all in how you choose to see it and how you choose to make the most of it. Don't listen to the crazies. All the sororities are good.

Yes, it's worth rushing. Plenty of OOS/OOR girls find a great home, but without connections you will need to keep an open mind. You already know your odds with top and even maybe mid-tier houses which is good - many girls are shocked when they're cut after the first round from top tier houses (especially if they could pledge top tier at their own state school as you wrote), but rush is like job interviewing - it's who you know, not what, to a great degree for top tier and some mid-tier.
Why are those houses bottom? Because they're the newest houses. Theta isn't that new, but it is in comparison to all the other houses and once the other 'lower tier houses' folded in the 80's, Theta fell into the bottom slot. They've had other challenges which is why they're considered in this tier.
There are plenty of girls who love their houses in the bottom tier so don't listen to the tier talk.
As for why the top tiers are top? They were the first houses founded here. Check the dates of when each chapter was founded and you can see how they wound up top tier, mid-tier and lower-tier. Once houses are entrenched like that, it's hard to move up. This is true on most campuses.
As for Theta, APhi and ADPI being top where you're from, that's how it goes - every sorority has lower tier chapters in one area and top tier in another, it totally varies from school to school. Even the sororities considered the strongest nationally (like Theta) has houses that struggle or are lower tier. Doesn't matter, be open and find a house you love, it can happen.

Rush is honestly nothing about your resume or where you're from. It's all about connections and who you know. Even if you "know of" people that will not help you. Girls with great grades and outstanding resumes end up in those three houses and it's purely because they are overlooked during rush. Some of the ones in those houses are even more "accomplished" resume wise than people in top houses, they just lacked connections. Go through rush, if you hate it you can drop but there's no such thing as a bad sorority on campus and you will find your people in every house.
#4 by: Sorry, it's who you know
This is the sad truth - rush is ONLY about who you know. Great girls and great resumes get looked over ALL THE TIME because people are too busy placating to alums or HS friends.
It's ok though, because it is also the reason the gap between sororities and tiers is closing in!!

Keep in mind that most sororities at Ole Miss do NOT judge you on superficial, shallow criteria such as looks, appearance, wealth, etc. As we all know, established sororities here use a system that is entirely merit-based, and they do not have any selection process that factors in looks, etc. So you should be fine. Have fun!

OOS pnm - you need one or more of these to have options :
1-2 recs per sorority (good recs not rando)
legacy from anywhere
reach out to girls at ole miss
all about who you know
it is not about trying to get into one but its rather impressing all so that you get to choose, remember it still your decision not only the sororities decision

They can be happy and find friends if their mindset is not ab tiers but if this person cares ab getting in a top tier or mid tier then they need to know the truth of how competitive ole miss is for oos girls with avg resumes and no connections. Honestly ik cute jackson girls w good avg resumes and a few connections and they still only got theta and a phi after the second round.
I think candy coating things and oos girls spending all that money to come here and then realizing they aren't as special here as they are in their own state.
