chances
by: anonymousI'm sure there's going to be mixed opinions but I had to stay close to home for the year last minute and im transferring to ole miss next fall. I want to get involved with greek life as soon as possible but I don't want to rush at my current school and carry over my affiliation if there will be resentment for just walking into that house without rushing there. but id be an out of state sophomore transfer so would I have a chance with any of the good houses rushing as a sophomore? I know girls that are recent ole miss grads and alums from one of the sororities im interested in so I would have recommendations. would it be a better idea to rush now and transfer my affiliation or rush as a sophomore?

short answer: no
long answer: heck no

we all know someone.

first one. sophomores that transfer always end up in bottom tier and less than 50% end up in a house.

I rushed as a transfer sophomore and it didnt work out for me. I know yall will be like "why is this gdi on here leave wtf" all that good bs, but i heard about something that was posted on here about a friend and ended up finding this thread. I had 2 or more recs for every house i was interested in and got dropped from all "top tiers" and i know of a lot of "top tiers" that dropped all sophomores. But you have a shot if you know A BUNCH of girls in a house... recs mean almost nothing anymore, aside from being a reason to not be dropped by every house on like day 1. a sophomore I knew had a great rush, rushed kappa and is super happy. you can def go for it, it'll be hard though. i'd try rushing at your current school if you dont know anybody in any houses.

First, your odds of pledging as a sophomore are reduced at OM....there are houses that will pretty much immediately drop you. There are other houses that will consider you if you make a good connection and have other qualities they want. It can happen even if sophomore pledging is a challenge.
As for transferring and affiliating with an OM chapter - that's hard. I've known girls who did that and here's the challenges: 1) Friendships are already intact among girls, including those your age. That doesn't mean you can't make friends - you can - but it can take more work to do so; 2) Different personality among chapters. One sorority might be a lot of very academically, low-key girls at one school and a lot of party girls at another. 3) I know people hate tier talk, but here's where I've seen transferring be hard: a girl can transfer from what is a top, middle or lower tier chapter to another chapter that is totally opposite and that can be a hard fit. I know a girl who transferred from a top chapter to her new school where her sorority was lower tier - it just wasn't a personality fit, not better or worse, but not a fit. Likewise I've seen the opposite happen too.
In short, don't count on being a personality match to a house at OM if you transfer as a member from your current school.
I'd try to rush and see what could happen. At least that way you'd know if you are a personality match to the house.
