Yes it will.

Yes, unfortunately it will. VQ can really be helpful with establishing chapters and numbers but can also be confusing and frustrating if you don't fully understand the process or importance. SOOOOOOOOO, be prepared to be confused and frustrated because NO ONE at ole miss will try to help you understand what the heck is going on and how it works. All you'll hear is 'trust the system'. They want every PNM to blindly trust the system and not have to explain the process because NO ONE wants to be held accountable.

There are maybe only two girls per house that actually know how VQ works. This is not Fort Knox. I do not understand why the powers that be want to keep chapters, sisters, and even advisors in the dark. it's crazy.

I promise ask any girl in any house on campus and they won't be able to explain the system to you because they don't know themselves!!!

Panhellenic, what say you??

I understand your frustration! I finally googled variable quota and how it works for panhellenic chapters. I found a thread on Greekchat about it that helped me. The same idea is used at Arkansas and called tiered quota. Other schools have used it too. It keeps the oldest chapters from having 500 more girls than newer chapters, which means the chapters are healthier. Smaller or more manageable chapters actually offer a lot of benefits over mega-sized ones. Of course I think this information should be shared so PNMs are less nervous. The truth is that PNMs can't do anything about it but it lets them understand that this process is very much a numbers game.

they used it at Arkansas and top chapters took around 100 girls and bottom chapters took around 175. all that does is continue with the exclusivity of top chapters. dont let Panhellenic fool you!

How would it be exclusive if the top chapters have 500 or more girls in them? Without VQ that's what we'd have. Hard enough to know your sisters with 400 girls in a house, much less with 500 or more.

And without VQ the new chapters could have a tough time getting their numbers up and any houses that might struggle to meet quota would have the same problem as well.

The big would get bigger and the small might get smaller. Not a win for anyone.

VQ is not a permanent thing. It is in place for a few years on campuses that have a handful of newer chapters that need to attain larger total memberships to establish some equity among the sororities. Everybody gets a great new member class and parity among chapters is achieved. The result is more pnm's getting placed and being happy in their houses, and everybody benefits from a stronger sorority system across the board that can be sustained with RFM.

That is an excellent explanation. Thank you.

VQ just means pnms who should’ve ended up in a top house will end up in a lower house. All houses should take the same amount. Ex: all take 100 pnms. Not a top house takes 75 and a bottom 125. If you were pnm number #76 for a top house you’re screwed with this system.

That is not at all how it works. Variable Quota. Meaning, quota varies among houses. Houses with the largest memberships take a smaller class, houses that need to build their numbers get to take a larger class. And the 'top' and 'bottom' mentality is part of the problem. The moms, alums, and actives who have shamed other houses and called other sorority women 'bottom' for the badges they wear have greatly contributed to the need for variable quota.

My friend was at State a few years back when this happened to try to help ADPi. It didn’t work and a ton of top pnms were devastated.

It was you mammas who were said and angry and complaining that your daughters didn't get their legacy houses. Messed y'all up something terrible. Ruined your lives and killed all hope for the future. Mississippi problems. LMAO

If you spend your whole life raised to be an ABC and then cut because XYZ is not good enough to get members on their own without Panhellenic help then yeah that is a problem. Mississippi or not.

OOS legacies have rarely been given a chance at their legacy house, so every legacy has not been fairly considered. If being from Mississippi is the only requirement for top tier it almost doesn't even make sense that they are top tier.

VQ may increase numbers for struggling chapters but girls end up dropping anyway since they end up in a house they honestly didn’t want. In the end they still struggle and girls get cut out of the Greek system.

I can see why you might prophesy this but it’s just not true.

You can never know true reason you were released. You can’t be sure you (or your daughter most likely) were cut because of variable quota. That’s you assuming that you were the next name on the list and that the house you “were raised to be in” would’ve taken you for sure if they could’ve taken 125 instead of 102?! Please. You have no idea if you were next in line. “Raised all your life to be ABC but got stuck in XYZ,” or whatever nonesense you were whining about? Get over yourself and go into recruitment with an open mind and heart, and know that everything may not work out the way you thought it would, but you can still find happiness in where you land if you are open to it.

Well goodness gracious the Moms are sure worried about variable quota! They talked about it all day. I'm trying to figure out how they don't understand it, and why it's important to them. Apparently they are worried that their precious little Buffy won't get an invitation to her chosen sorority. Let's not worry about the success of Ole Miss Greek life, let's only be concerned if OUR daughter gets into her top tier.
