advisors vs actives

by: Rebs

What sororities do the advisors have as much or more voting power in which girls get in ? I️ heard Tri Delt , Chi O , KD , DG that the advisors have the last say on who gets in . Is this true ?

Why worry about this? There's nothing you can do about it.

why not worry about this? what if I want to join a sorority where the actual ole miss students have the say in membership selection and where there would be leadership opportunities for me instead of those people vetted/selected/whatever you want to call it, by advisors?

There's still nothing you can do about it. At the end of recruitment you will be chosen by the sorority that wants you - regardless of who made the decision.

Okay, @Rebs, here's your answer: Every sorority chapter's membership selection is their own private business. No outsider has any right to information on how they do it. If you want leadership opportunities then go get them; they are everywhere on campus. But coming on here demanding answers as an outsider so that you can approve or not will do you no good at all. It's just trolling.

Okay members only. Wanting to know the role of the advisors versus the actives is legitimate question - nobody is asking about membership criteria, voting, scoring, etc. But the advisor presence impacts the student experience and whether that's a pro or a con depends on the individual. Some enjoy the advisors roles. Some want more ownership over how their sorority is managed. It seems to me that YOU are being OVERLY defensive. About what, I'm not sure. You know how else you could legitimately answer this question? By pointing out the benefits of having advisors involved in pnm selection and the benefits of them not involved.

It's not like you would even have a choice in the houses that invite you back. This isn't a sign up sheet where pnm's go where they want. The houses do the choosing, no matter who is involved. If you are soooo concerned why don't you ask the actives your questions during recruitment. You would make an impression for sure.

I️ wanted to know because I️ heard that no matter how many girls meet you and like the advisors have the last say in Tri Delt , Chi O , DG, KD , and maybe Kappa. I️ also heard that alumni are better off. Calling advisors to help girls with the rush is now. Is this true ?

Subtitle, yet another attempt by DG to classify themselves with the top tier.

For those interested, not ranking, usually the sorority age determines how much the alumni influence the pnm class. The older the house, the more the alumni have a say so.

Chio is by far the most alumni based picks. DDD is second. KD is probably third but compared to the first two KD and the rest's alumni have little say so.

Back at you, @Nice try DG. If you were really in the know, you would NEVER have used the word 'alumni.'

From a member of one the houses the OP mentioned, I have to say have no idea what you’re talking about. Only the rush teams of sororities know the real scoop, and they aren’t going to say.

Also, DG is a “top house” whether you like it or not—my friends in Dg are awesome. By saying DG is a top house takes nothing away from other top houses (there are several highly desired houses), and even though I’m in a different house, I don’t get offended or paranoid when someone says they are a top house (because it’s the truth and has been for a long time). Your grudge against DG (as evidenced by your posting about them constantly and obsessively) for cutting you isn’t going to change their standing on campus nor will it change the fact they will get a great pledge class as usual. Personally, they were one of my favorite houses during rush. Even though I ended up in a different house, they are still one of my favorites.

It's a mom of someone who cut by DG last fall. I'm sure of it. Most likely the PNM got to know some DG actives and thought she was assured a bid. Then she got cut. Now the mom is on here constantly bashing DG.

It happened to my sorority a couple of years ago. Some PNMs thought they were promised bids. When they were cut, the PNMs and their moms were all over this site bashing my house.

The way I see it, if a house gets bashed on this site, someone is jealous and paranoid.

I'm in one of the houses listed and while the advisors for sure do have a say, they don't make the final decision. They are there along the way to help and they strongly give their input, but at the end of the day it is our rush team that makes the final decisions. The advisors usually get their girls in by being super overbearing and annoying rush team about the girls they want. Honestly, you want at least some advisor input, because they often get info on PNMs that the rush team doesn't, including both horrible reputations and stellar under-the-radar girls.

I wouldn't worry about this....it will really only affect you if you are on rush team or like president. While normal members get to vote and stuff, they don't have much say other than that. Each house seems to get a stellar pledge class whether they have tons of advisor input or not.

This is helpful for those houses that use a rush team to select members. Some sororities run member selection different and the entire membership votes on who to invite to parties and ultimately to join. My chapter does not use rush teams, which is why no one can answer the OP -- all houses run rush differently.

Please feel free to chime in if these aren't the case for your house, but I feel like these are pretty solid across the board.

1. All membership selection is a secret. No one who actually cares about their chapter will divulge that information to someone not in their chapter.

2. All chapters select members differently. For some chapters, it is part of their ritual. I could say "my chapter picks PNM names out of a hat and unless we get 25 'no' votes, she moves on to the next round" and it wouldn't make a difference since everyone on here is anonymous so there's no way to verify if what I'm saying is true. So even if someone on here says "I'm not an XYZ but XYZ is an amazing chapter and they don't let their alums have any say in MS" - why would you believe them? If they're not really an XYZ, they wouldn't know the truth anyway.

3. Alumni advisors in all houses help with recruitment. To what degree is different between chapters. However, I think it's fair to say that no one person can make or break a PNM's recruitment. No one active can guarantee you a bid even if you were BFFs and next door neighbors for 18 years and she pinky promised you a bid. The alumni advisor may have more "sway" if they know more information about a PNM that could cause them to get released, like their GPA.

4. Most actives will never know where PNMs rank on their lists or what their scores or GPAs are, because if that bottom-ranked girl on your pref list comes to the house on bid day, would you want the entire chapter to know where they ranked? If a chapter member loves a PNM and scores her well but she doesn't come back the next day, it could be because she was a GPA cut or she had a QR the active didn't know about, but that's why you're supposed to trust that your sisters are keeping the best interest of the chapter in mind when they vote.

5. Knowing any specific information about how a chapter selects PNMs or their level of alumni involvement will not help you in recruitment. You don't pick your chapter, they pick you, and you learn how they do it when you're initiated. if at that point you don't like how it's done, feel free to drop or transfer to a chapter where it's different, but there's no guarantees it will be.
