by: International

Hi! I'm an international student from Australia who will be coming here next year for a year and plan on rushing a sorority but i was just wondering what my chances were as I would have no recs and would only be there for a year and i know this is a really competitive school however i would love if i was able to join!

Sororities are looking for members for all four years. No chapter is going to waste a bid on someone they know would only be there just to get initiated and then leave. You wouldn't be there long enough to add anything to the membership in the long run, so no, you are not a candidate for sorority membership.

I wish the MOMS would quit giving advice. They just seem to enjoy being A-holes.

What's YOUR advice then?

Recs are important for many houses; some lower tier houses will pledge someone without one. You'd almost for sure be cut from top tier houses without connections but that's true for girls from many places. Connections are somewhat important for mid-tier houses.

The biggest issue is being here only one year. As the other poster said, I can't imagine a house being willing to use up a pledge "slot" for someone here for that short a time. They want girls for 4 years or at least 3. I usually always encourage girls to rush, whether they're here without connections or an upperclassman who could be in a house a few years, but in your case, I honestly don't think it would be worth your while and certainly I don't see it worth a house's while to have someone for so short a time, to be really honest.

By the way, are you going to be a freshman or upperclassman? Why only a year if you're coming all the way from Australia?

Another Mom, probably never heard of study abroad.

The bigger question is WHY HERE? Of all the schools to choose from, why would anyone studying abroad choose Ole Miss on purpose? LOL

Why not here? And how is this an issue for you?

The best advice anyone can give you is to check with the Ole Miss Panhellenic Council. They do have a website that will explain the recruitment process. If I were you I would email them with your question. It is true that the sororities do prefer to have girls who are in it for the 4 year run, but we all know there are girls who leave after the first semester or after a year. There are a couple of sororities that do not require recs according to the panhellenic site, however one of those requires Ole Miss connections. The other is known as an out of state sorority so they might be willing to consider your application.

There are foreign students in several sororities but most are here for the full four years. Personally I think it could be possible for you to find a sorority that would be willing to get to know you and allow you to spend your year with them, but I can't say for sure. Check with the Panhellenic Council.

True, there are girls who leave after their first or second semester, but we don't know that's going to happen with them. If we knew for sure that someone was only going to be around for two semesters then we wouldn't offer that bid. I guess we would if we really needed the numbers.

With more sororities and with fewer girls going through recruitment this past year, it could be possible for a sorority to consider someone coming in for only a year or students who are transferring from community colleges who will only be here for two years. It could be that some of the sororities that are struggling with their numbers would consider this an option to temporarily give their numbers a boost.

Who knows, she might be a welcomed addition to a struggling sorority even if it is for a short time.

Thought that was what variable quota was for.

Variable quota is to bring the sororities numbers closer to each other. Some of the sororities are still struggling with their recruitment numbers even with variable quota. Above poster is correct that it could be possible to help boost numbers by considering a non traditional approach to recruitment. Including a study abroad student or community college transfers could help those sororities reach their quota numbers and hold on to those numbers, and offer those students the opportunity to participate in Greek life.

Everybody knows there are at least 1000 international students here. There is a BIG difference between being here for all four years to get a degree and just being here for a semester or two. There have been international students in sororities here for years, but not as transients, they are here until graduation.

1000 international students? Omg that’s huge lol. Where did you come up with a whole thousand? Did you pull that from admissions? I’m being sarcastic btw

A quick fact check shows 819 International students for the 2016-2017 year. Couldn't find numbers for 2017-2018. Apparently Ole Miss is 78th out of 1,148 overall best value for US Colleges and Universities for International Students.

I love how Moms Everywhere thinks that by running around this site pointing out mom and troll posts makes them somehow less pathetic? Newsflash: You're here too with nothing better to do.

there are a few international students. obv have realistic expectations, you aren't going to be top tier. but you will get in some where as long as you put in some effort

i wouldn't tell anyone you are only staying for a year, no one is going to bid you.

if you are rushing as a freshmen you should be ok. but if you are a transfer student rushing as a junior/senior AND only staying for a year then well.... i hate telling someone they won't get a bid, but yeah

For this very reason our sorority will never bid someone from Australia....ever!

To all the Mississippi Moms saying that no one will want this girl, please shut up. You had your time to be in Greek life in 1985. You’re no longer relevant. Let the actives handle this one.

My chapter actually really rushed a girl from Australia hard last year. She was only going to be there a short amount of time but we still really wanted her. Unfortunately, we didn’t get her and we were super sad about it. The point is, YES you have a chance. You should ASBOLUTELY register for recruitment and go through the process. Sisterhood isn’t just for 4 years, it’s for life. Even if the only year you’re in America you spend it with the chapter, that’s still going to be a year that you enrich the sorority and they enrich you. If you did it and loved it so much, you could even talk to your home university and start a chapter back in Australia after you go home. There are a lot of options. Don’t let these bitter moms tell you you have no chance because I know my house would absolutely bid you.

Seriously. They stay on this site giving bad advice, they have no idea what's going on, they pretend to be actives, and they are so self-righteous. I can't imagine how sad their lives must be if stalking Greek Rank is the highlight of their life. Also, the 80's and 90's must have been some mean, mean times.

Oh please...the Moms wouldn't recognize a legitimate question from a Troll, they're too busy trolling themselves. Which may explain why they think every question is a troll - they think it's one of their own. They should develop some type of Mom troll code so they can recognize each other.
