should i tell my recruitment counselor about this?
by: pnm
So I have a decently serious anxiety disorder, and it becomes heightened in times of high stress and also in really hot environments. I think I will be able to function mostly fine during recruitment, but I'm concerned that I could potentially have a panic attack since I can't always predict when they happen.
Would it be worth mentioning this to my recruitment counselor so they know what to do/what's going on if I were to have an attack during rush, or would people think I'm weird for even bringing it up?

You Gamma Chi is there to help you, if you think it’s going to be an issue you should tell her. I probably wouldn’t like forewarn the active you’re talking too during rounds because that sets a weird tone for the conversation, but if you find yourself getting dizzy and think you’re about to have an anxiety attack just tell the active and she will know where to get you water
or quieter cooler place. I am an active and I have a history of anxiety attacks too so I understand. I would honestly recommend staying super hydrated before rounds and trying to remember that you’re going to get a bid somewhere, Sorority recruitment is just one part of the experience you’re going to have in your time at Ole Miss. It helps to realize that the actives are girls just like you and we’re going through the same things last year, we’re not out to get you or tear you down. We know how terrifying rush is and being in a sorority for a year or 2 doesn’t make us automatically forget the stresses of rush.

I don't think your Gamma Chi would think you are weird, they're literally there to help you have a good and positive rush experience and they would probably be receptive to hearing any potential issues. Obviously you wouldn't bring it up to an active, but I don't know if your Gamma Chi would tell her sisters who could potentially judge you for it

This is excellent advice. I'd also let your Gamma Chi know HOW she can help you and what the attacks look like. Not everyone knows what they might look like so that is important for her to know, especially if you need more than water. I've read that things like Gatorade help hydrate you better than water (which is why football players use it, especially in the heat of summer when practicing) so maybe have that on hand.
I've suffered from anxiety as well - perhaps not to the degree you have - and deep breathing has always helped me, so maybe do that before you go off to parties. And distraction can help - focus on getting to know your fellow PNM's and have fun with that, perhaps that will make a difference.
Most of all, realize as "Hey" wrote, that if you maximize every option during rush, you will get a bid.
