basically two types of people...

the ones from no where mississippi who think oxford is the greatest place on earth. and normal people from big towns or cities who think oxford is really boring.

either way your sorority and your friend group will make/break you. it's a cool small town. but outside of being in a house it's just too boring of a place for me.

Oxford has a nice little downtown. Even if you are from a large urban city you can appreciate it's value (unless you're one of those people who just can't find value in anything other than yourself). The shopping is limited but usually adequate and Memphis is a little over an hour away. Although you will probably want to do your school supply shopping before you get here as everything sells out quickly. The restaurants here are fantastic, PLENTY of places to eat, even some for late hours.

One word of caution: these people CAN NOT drive. It's like bumper cars on a track. You can expect to be hit or nearly hit daily. Pretty much every store in town is located on two very poorly designed roads. It's a nightmare. They probably blame OOS students, but most of the crazies I've had to dodge have Mississippi tags. Police aren't very helpful and they don't seem to care if you're run off the road or someone hits and run.

Other than the entire 'good luck driving here' it's not a bad place.

Amen on the horrible drivers!

Just google Oxford Ms and take your pick of any number of articles singing Oxfotrd's praises. It is one of the best small towns in the entire South. I am from a large oos southern metro and I love Oxford. Is it perfect? No. Every friend or family member that has visited loves it and wants to come back.

Yankees are generally the ones complaining as they have a tough time adjusting to a a quant, small southern town and its citizens.

Come see for yourself. I think you will find it to be cool town, and a great place to spend four years of college.
Good luck to you.

agree that it's a cool little town.

but also agree there isn't much here and it's very boring.

i think something that no one mentions that you should know is, it is NEVER as great as your first visit, especially if you visit during a gameday. it's an amazing place to visit (esp game days), but living here is another thing. hint why everyone goes greek including the local oxford high kids who already know 200+ people coming to ole miss. your house and your friends will make or break you. oxford as a town will get boring quick. it's doable for 4 years, but would never live here long term.

fyi i'm also from a small town, but i live 20 mins from a very big city. memphis is more like an hour and half away and even at that, as a city memphis doesn't offer much

Agree with everything the above poster wrote.

And to the OP, I'd add this: I have known some students who felt that when they got to Ole Miss, students weren't as friendly as they had been during their visits so they were disappointed (my experience is that it's non-Southerners who said this; not all, of course, but some). And a Game Day visit is a great experience, but those are six games a year so don't base coming here on that. I love Ole Miss and Oxford, but if you need more things on offer, it will be an adjustment. As the poster above said, Memphis doesn't really offer much.

It's a classic, Deep South small town in a very pretty setting with many people who were born and raised here or moved here to teach at Ole Miss. Lots of retirees too - Oxford has been named by many magazines as one of the best places to retire.

Thanks for the tips on the driving and shopping. Does Amazon deliver to Oxford? I won't have a car.

There is a delivery service that delivers food from restaurants. The bus service here is adequate for getting around during the day, especially from the campus to most of the apartments around town. We use ride services for late night. I have a car and often go all week and never drive. Once you meet people you can usually find someone with a car to make grocery runs with. Not having a car is not ideal but you won't be alone and you can still get places.

I went to Oxford HS and now Ole Miss and I love it more than I did in HS. Oxford is the biggest small town there is

if you think oxford is the "biggest" small town, then i can guarantee you you are missing a few teeth

it's a cool little town. a lot nicer than what you'd expect if you never been here. but post above hits it, it gets boring and boring very quick. and a lot more boring than what you'd expect from just one campus visit.

esp this past year, where you play bama the 3rd week and you lose in a blood bath and everyone gives up on football. and it's been too cold for most of the school year for the pool.

planned on dropping because dues got too expensive and i've made a friend group but i just couldn't. it's still boring here while being in a sorority.

keep in mind college is 2 maybe 3 hours a day, not 8am to 3pm like high school. also chances are you won't be as involved around campus as you were with high school (cheer, soccer, volleyball)

I adore Oxford. But I didn't come here looking for a big town/city experience. If you think Oxford is boring, try going to some of the small liberal arts colleges in the middle of nowhere. That's boring. There is plenty to do here. But if you're not somebody who is willing to sometimes seek things out and want excitement right outside your front door, then Ole Miss may not be for you.

And if you only have classes 2 or 3hours a day and you aren't involved around campus, that's on you.

Really wish they would work on improving bike lanes and friendlier pedestrian sidewalks. I would love to bike more places, but it's a challenge and often a suicide mission.

Yes! Why isn't there a nice bike lane going into town?

It honestly depends on what region in the US you're from and if you live in a big city, small town, etc. Oxford is a small, cute college town. We have some unique things to do like Faulkner's house, underground tunnels, etc. but most things like that are only fun once or twice. We have some cute boutiques on the square but not really any big chains and often getting stuff from those boutiques mean you'll have the same clothes as many other people at Ole Miss. We don't have a Target, Whole Foods, Urban Outfitters, etc. but we do have Ulta, Marshall's, Belk, Walmart, etc. The people are very southern and huge Ole Miss fans. Game days are a lot of fun and a very unique experience. But that is only 6 or 7 weekends out of the year. Ole Miss students are very passionate about sports (football mainly) and like to go out most weekends and often during the week too (not everyone though. just a large part of greeks do go out multiple times a week). The campus is beautiful and not too big so you can walk to all your classes and its a pretty walk.

It honestly just depends on the person and you'll just have to come visit to see. If possible I would try to visit on a normal day and on a game day so you can see both sides. I love it and would never consider transferring and all my friends love it but I know there are people that regret coming here and some that even transfer. I am from MS and most of my friends are from MS or surrounding states. A lot of people that come here grew up coming to games and their parents went to Ole Miss. but there are tons that are from way out of state and have no connections to Ole Miss at the same time. Come visit!! We'd love to have you.
