Does anyone know if there will be variable quota used in recruitment this year?

More likely than not, it will be used for at least a few more years

It’s voted on every year and I don’t think the vote has happened yet for this fall’s rush.

I think so because it will help the houses that need increased numbers to get them and to get their numbers stabilized.

I hope so because we need all the chapters to get their numbers up and be on even footing so we can bring on another house or two soon. Membership is too large, we need more sororities.

I know a bit about greek life here and expansion. Word from the Greek office is that there is no where else for a new house to be built. That is word from the university. When they invited Alpha Phi and ADPi, the university knew those were the last additions for the foreseeable future.

The numbers are starting to even out, but variable quota will probably be necessary for at least one more year. The decision will be made by looking at the number of Actives returning in the Fall and the number of PNMs that register for recruitment. The number can also adjust as Recruitment week progresses.

I would also hope that future expansion will be considered. I think many people agree that the houses are too big and given how many more girls go through rush every year, new houses will be needed to avoid getting even bigger. I think the whole point of sisterhood gets lost with such large numbers.

The only way to bring new sororities on campus (if the numbers require it) is to ensure that the houses with lower numbers get up to stable, solid numbers and that would mean likely being at those numbers for the next few years before new houses colonize here. So I would see Variable Quota being kept in place for at least the next many years, especially if new chapters come to OM because they too would need VQ to get stable numbers.

From @StuJan -

"I know a bit about greek life here and expansion. Word from the Greek office is that there is no where else for a new house to be built. That is word from the university. When they invited Alpha Phi and ADPi, the university knew those were the last additions for the foreseeable future."

This should be interesting because without more sororities, houses will get bigger and bigger as more girls rush - exactly what Variable Quota and new chapter additions were designed to help. 400-500 girls is not a sorority, it's a small village and I think it defeats the purpose of a sorority.

I can't imagine there really isn't more land. What about the university selling the old Zeta house (I think it's used for Dining Services now) to a new sorority? They could do a tear-down and put up a new house. And this is why it's too bad that the Honors College took over the old ADPi house - it could have been torn down for a new, more current house.

As for more land - I think there has to be more, it just won't be on or near Sorority Row or Rebel Drive. Schools expand Greek systems all the time and sometimes it means new houses are on another part of the campus.

Short of rush numbers dropping dramatically (not happening), I guess this means we'll see chapters with 500+ girls.

Or, yes, Dining Services could get a new building and so could Honors College and that would be two sorority houses. No building is permanent really.

Honors recently went through a major renovation and dedication so they aren't going to be leaving their building anytime soon.

Someone else said it - Honors just did a major renovation so that's not going anywhere.

What about the land on the other side of the ADPi house? Looks big enough for a new house. And there is a bit of land at the end of Sorority Row (by the school entrance) that might work. Between those two and the old Zeta house you could have room for 3 new sororities over the coming years.

At the rate OM is growing and more and more girls going through rush, there's going to be problems without new chapters opening here.

As a Mom who comments on this site EVERY.SINGLE.DAY., it's critically important that I know if variable quota is going to continue! My life will be meaningless unless I have the answer to this question!
