off campus living

by: looking4ahouse

This is not really a Greek question, but maybe some of you are able to help me out nonetheless. I am currently an OOS freshman living in a contemporary dorm. I am wondering what the best apartments are around here; however, I really do not wish to be paying like $800 or so a month in rent on top of OOS tuition. Which are the cheapest without being too dirty and old? Also, is it odd for a sophomore to live on campus again? It is just so convenient, but I don't know if that's just like a freshman thing.

so you want something cheap but want to live on campus as a soph?

well an apartment is better in every way. you get your own room, share a kitchen/living room etc, it's nicer and it's cheaper.

$800 a month? Not sure what you are talking about. Most apartments here are from college kids and it's done by room. I don't know any apartments that pay $800 per person per month. Even the most expensive 2 bedroom furnished are about $700 a month. If you get a 3 or 4 bedroom, it's about $500 a month.

Honestly way too expensive for a sht town that is Oxford, MS. For $700 per month per person it's almost a LA or Manhattan pricing. I'm from Nashville and the Vandy/Belmont kids that live near the city and nicer places don't even pay $700 a month.

Instead of Oxford building housing for the poor they need to stop these idiots from jacking up renting prices.

wut-You should leave since Oxford is such an awful place. There are more ole miss/oxford haters on this site. Bitter is no way to go through life. Transfer why don't you? You would complain about that place as well.

idk where you're looking in LA or Manhattan that's 700 per month but please let me know because I'd love to get on that! I live in DC which is way cheaper than Manhattan or LA (still hella expensive but not as bad as those two) and it's not surprising to pay $1800 per month in a 3/4 bedroom.

700 each for a 3 bedroom is 2100

which is more expensive than 1800 for your DC apartment

lower end of manhattan and LA is usually 800-900 each per room. maybe if you shop around you can find something around 700 each per room.

i agree oxford rent is ridiculous for a sht town, it's just greedy people taking advantage of college kids. i don't rate any apartment here better than mediocre

just to clarify, I meant $1800/person in a 3/4 bedroom, not overall. Rent is crazy, especially in good neighborhoods. That's why it sucks that colleges often are in such nice neighborhoods, because it means the rent is nearly impossible for those students who obviously aren't making at least $75k a year.

You should be able to find something in the $500.00 a month range that's good. I share my apartment with 3 others, we each pay 650.00 a month. The rent is high when you consider our apartment is getting $2,600.00 a month total. However, if you look early in the spring you can usually find the better deals for the fall semester. There's lots of new apartments being built and the new ones sometimes offers deals to get you to sign up, which means the old ones will probably offer deals also.

It is a simple concept called supply and demand.
