changes in greek life

by: Change

As a Senior this year I have seen a lot of changes in fraternity’s and sorority’s in the past but nothing like what is going to happen soon. With more fraternity’s being under fire from the public and the university there will most likely be a large drop/rise in fraternity’s next year or the year after that. Sorority’s are also beginning to change strategies to attract more pnms because of the quota system. Even if you don’t agree this is just my two cents. Thanks for listening!

Also there will be quotas in sororities. Like 25% white 25% black 25% Hispanic 25% other for diversity sake

There will be no such thing. Every sorority national has a policy of allowing each chapter to decide their membership (the local alum influence is a whole other thing though) and no nationals have ever or would ever impose diversity quotas for any chapter. And the university has no say so whatever.

I agree with some of what you said. Universities see Greek life as an asset and a liability. They do care about the liability that can come from poor decisions of 17-22 year olds. The University has and will continue to make changes but will have to walk the fine line of protecting their assets (donations, enrollment, etc.) And managing the liability (accidents, bad press, loss of donations, etc.) Of Greek Life.

You can't create percentages out of thin air. If the PNM pool isn't 25% white 25% black 25% Hispanic 25% other, neither will your pledge classes be.

The plural of sorority is sororities, not sorority's. The plural of fraternity is fraternities, not fraternity's. A "senior" who can't write as well as a fifth grader; but that's Ole Miss for you.

What do you mean that there will be a large "drop/rise" in fraternities? Which is it a drop in membership or a rise in membership...it can't be both. What also makes you think it will drop or rise? Speculation? A hunch?

Was just trying to understand your statement.

I have wondered about the possible changes in how the University will treat sororities and fraternities in the future. I don't think that Ole Miss is perfect but I do think that the University and Alumni have already played an active role in monitoring what fraternities do. I think our greek life and campus is more in control than say an FSU.

I also think the University also understands that if they make a unilateral decision on greek policy they will get hit hard...real hard in the pocketbook.
