First cuts are often based on gpa. Each sorority has a base line gpa they will accept, and it varies from house to house. My house cuts for GPA first round, but I honestly don't know how other chapters do it. Some houses will take a "grade risk," which means you will be on academic probation in that sorority and hopefully their suggestions will be of help if you're not doing your best in school. I hope someone else will chime in with how they do it. This is an excellent question.

this- we wouldn't take a grade risk if we could have an "identical girl" that wasn't a grade risk- or even if not risk- we would def. take the one with better grades

Without knowing your GPA, it's hard to say if you were cut for that. But yes, many of the houses have s GPA cut-off so this is the first group of PNMs to be cut. If you're on the borderline they might take you back but that's often when you already have very tight in-house connections.
And yes it really does matter.
