variable quota

by: Just saying

Something to keep in mind. Variable Quota was established last year to help even out the sororities numbers. Of course KD, DDD and Chi-O have the lowest quota numbers, their numbers were reduced by about 40 to 50 from previous years. So if Variable Quota had been started three years ago that means there are close to 120 girls (in KD, DDD and Chi-O) who would not be in those sororitys. Those girls would have had the exact same resumes but they would have ended up in one of the other sororities.

How exactly does variable quota work? What if you put down prefs that don't match up with the sororities that want you? What will next week be like in regards to bids?

Variable Quota was established by Panhellenic to even out the numbers. KD, DDD and Chi-O will probably have a quota number of around 100. DG, Phi Mu, Pi Phi and AOPi will probably have quotas of around 125. Kappa, Alpha Phi, ADPi and Theta could have quotas as high as 180.

It would be great if your preference choices match up with the sororities that want you - however the reality is it might not work out that way. I always hate to hear the "find your home" because you might fall in love with a sorority but that sorority doesn't end up on your preference list. The best advice is "GO IN WITH AN OPEN MIND" and don't stress. All of our sororities here at Ole Miss are amazing. There are beautiful, smart, funny, and talented girls in every sororities just like every sorority also has social awkward and weird girls. Freshman don't know how much work goes into selecting each new member and if you are fortunate enough to receive a bid from an Ole Miss sorority it means that sorority wanted you. I promise you can love any sorority you are invited to if you give it a chance.

"Hope this helps" had the best advice---"GO IN WITH AN OPEN MIND"!

Like she said, variable quota is in place to even out the sororities. Last year quotas were like 100, 130ish and 160. This year they will be similar. In addition to different quotas, Panhellenic tells each house how many girls to drop each round. Last year the top houses dropped 1000 girls each after Round 1.

To even get to Prefs, you have to get invited back to houses for Rounds 2 and 3. That's why having an OPEN MIND is so key! Give each house a chance, and be realistic. All our sororities are great, and we really look forward to next week!

What are the criteria to get in top sororities, such as gpa, act score, etc.? How much influence do recs play in the rush process? Do you have to have at least one active "pulling for you" in a sorority to get a bid? How may girls are going through rush this year and and how many will be cut?

Kappa had more members drop than any other sorority this spring.
The large number of Kappas dropping brought Kappa's total membership to within like 30 to 50 of ADPi and AlphaPhi sjbnso that's probably why they were put in same boat.

I think pnms would and will be surprised at the overlaps in houses rushing the same girls, which is why it's a good idea not to insult houses to your friends. Rush does not break down strictly along the superficial lines this site tries to divvy houses into. Houses are more similar than dissimilar, which is why it's helpful to go through the rounds with an open mind.

Stereotypes seem to make the world "easier" or simpler to understand, but they don't really hold up when considering houses filled with 500 girls. I guarantee many pnms will be surprised at where they and their friends wind up -- and for most, that surprise will turn into happiness. Not trying to lecture. I wanted to share what my friends and I went through so that you do not set yourself up to "fail." Recruitment did not go the way I'd expected, but I staying in the process and ultimately found a lot of new friends and social opportunities where I pledged. The same is true for most of the girls who go through recruitment.

So will Kappa's quota be 180? Why do so many drop? Transfer back to Texas or Alabama? Do they take girls that can't afford it?

So much good advice in this post. You have to be strategic day 1 with your rankings. If you have no rec at a top house rank them low and keep your options open. They will be nice to you because they want a high return rate. Be strategic from day 1 and get a full schedule back day 3. Then you have some control. Stop giving top houses bragging rights.

This is excellent helpful advice. If I hadn't kept a certain sorority (which I did like just not as "prestigious" as my other top picks) I would have come down to prefs and been cut out of rush. I fortunately had that one house left and I got a bid. I know people mock the national reputation of sororities but that was the reason I kept my "safety" and it turned out to be a helpful plan. Be strategic, as Really writes!! You want a full schedule for return invitations so you have some more choices as the week progresses. Do not let the top houses cut you out of recruitment. You need to be able to have a say in where you end up.

The painful truth is if you haven't gotten any attention from a top tier sorority by today, you will not be getting a bid from them.
So after round 1 don't waste one of your eight chances on them.
Sorry but that's the truth!

85 for some houses, 110 for others, 135-180 for others.

the girls i know that dropped Kappa did it because they said it wasn't a sisterhood anymore. They said there was a lot of backstabbing and elitism among members along with an overall lack of respect between pledge classes

My only comment is Variable Quota was not established at Ole Miss. it was/is used here like it has been at other Universities.

I doubt OP was trying to imply Ole Miss is taking credit for variable quota.

Plus one of the benefits that NO ONE talks about is that VQ helps keep girls from falling through the cracks and being strung along by sororities that know they don't want you / have room on their bid list for you- I rushed 2 years ago before VQ and was strung along and cut by all but one sorority the day of pref. THAT FREAKING HURT A LOT! Had VQ been in place I would have been cut earlier, not "fallen in false love" with a house that knew they didn't want me, and truly been able to give other houses that did want me a chance.

Yes!! This is a huge benefit of VQ. I know girls who rushed before VQ and they also got heavily cut at the end.

No, RFM is what prevents that, which Ole Miss has been doing all along just like everywhere else. Release Figure Management tells all houses how many to drop after each round. You were cut because you did make it that far but not all the way to pref. VQ is not what that's about.
