do houses matter?

by: OM

And I mean, the actual physical houses?

If I don't like the people in the house, the bricks don't matter. I know it's used as a selling point, and girls are proud of their houses, but, I honestly don't think it means much.

It matters if it matters to YOU.

Talk to girls at schools where they don't have houses - only a dorm floor with a meeting room - and you will often hear a different opinion. I know girls at those types of schools and they get quite envious when they see what it's like to have an actual house.

You are correct @OM. The bricks don't matter. A gorgeous house is awesome, and if you are lucky enough to have one then appreciate it and enjoy it. But your sorority life is not about the big pretty mansion. Where is your HOME? That is not something you can see; you recognize HOME only in your heart.

I go to Auburn and love it and love my sorority, but I've always been jealous of the BEAUTIFUL houses that you see at Ole Miss, and Alabama, etc. Take it from a sister with NO house, all of y'all are blessed to have this benefit to being involved in a sorority at Ole Miss. Does having the most beautiful house make or break your sisterhood experience? Of course not, but if you're already pay big bucks for being greek at Ole Miss, you might as well get a gorgeous house as a bonus...

I'm not talking about places that don't have houses - that's not my point. I'm talking about the houses at OM. I don't care if your house is being built, renovated, was built last year or 10 years ago. A house doesn't make or break a sisterhood. You could live in the Taj Mahal, if I don't like the girls in the house, the house isn't going to change that.

Like I said, I get why it's a point of pride for the members. The houses are beautiful. But I don't get why people think that by having a new house, the newest house, or whatever, it somehow should impact the choice of a PNM?

Agree with your point. And as ridiculous as this sounds, there's a reason AOPi and Pi Phi renovated their houses to add "Southern architecture" - columns, shutters, etc. They were originally modern style houses built in the 60's (so was ADPi which is the Honors College now) and my aunts who went to OM in the 80's said that was - in some odd way - a turn-off.

Probably wouldn't matter now with so many girls from out of the region, but back then it was 99% Mississippi and Southern girls who like that style. And that's why the new houses have Southern style too, even with so many OOS and out of region girls.
