sorority rush as a sophomore

by: CurrentFreshman

So I made it through 21 party this year as a freshman and I dropped for grades which sucked a lot. I'm working really hard to bring my GPA back up (I fell just short of the requirement thanks to finite) and I'm not worried about not making the GPA requirement for next year's recruitment at all because I know I'll be fine after this first semester. But I was so upset to not be able to rush because I had such a positive experience during 21 party and I know so many girls in chapters here. I would love to become involved in greek life here at IU but I have to wait a whole year for the opportunity. My question is, what's the deal with rushing as a sophomore? Will it hurt my chances at all? Do sororities want sophomores as badly as they want freshman? Is it hard to fit in with the sorority if they've known each other longer? Any sort of info would be greatly appreciated!

I am sure you're a great girl, but rushing as a sophomore is difficult at best. Expect no more than 8 or 9 chapters back in January. There are some chapters who are not allowed to take sophomores by their housing boards. They need to keep the classes even for financial reasons. The good thing is that there are some chapters of each "tier" that take sophomores. You will have to go in to recruitment with an open mind. No matter how many friends you have in a certain chapter, they still may not take sophomores. If there is a new chapter on campus next fall, you wouldn't have to wait until January to join, just a thought.

girl trust me. I'm a sophomore. I didn't even rush at all last year because I played a sport and wasn't up for the challenge of athletics and greek life. Then I quit and decided, why not rush?
I had an AMAZING experience. I got all my top houses backed except for 1 each round. (so i had a full round every time, just with 1 i didn't rank) you will be FINE.

just like "honest truth" said- go in with an open mind. I even took a top tier house all the way to pref (but decided to go in a diff direction because of personal opinions). Just be yourself. it sounds so cheesy, but girls can definitely tell when you're trying to be different and "match" the house personality to try to fit in. You got this!! <3

Thank you both so much! I know rush isn't easy to begin with so I have always been prepared to have an open mind. But I really appreciate the honesty and advice!

I know a lot of girls who rushed as sophomores and got into houses. It is a little harder, but its definitely doable. Just be honest with the sororities about why you're rushing. They will love to hear that you wanted to rush so badly that you worked hard to get your grades up. And the better your grades are, the more opportunities for houses you have. Best of luck to you!!

some houses are big on not taking many sophomores. but those are ones that (to me) don't recruit for personality. instead, they recruit for their image. which in some way is every chapter (bc every chapter wants a good image) but not to that extent. If you are truly yourself and have confidence, you'll be fine. don't let being a sophomore define you during rush.

don’t be worried about it at all and don’t let anyone on here try to freak you out. I rushed freshman year, dropped. Rerushed my sophomore year and had a great rush and got my top house on bid night. All the other sophomores in my rush group got a ton of great houses back and if this is one of your concerns — we all ended up in “high tier” houses.
As long as you are yourself and find houses that you really click with, hardly any house will ever drop you “because you’re a sophomore”

Good luck you’ll do fine!!!
