bids

by: Confused

I saw posts on here saying that if you rank all of the houses that you attend pref for, you're guaranteed a bid from one of them. Is that true?

That's not true. It's very very likely but it's possible to not receive a bid

I'm almost positive that this is not true anymore

You're wrong. If a PNM ranks all chapters she prefs, she will receive a bid from one of them, just not necessarily her first or second choice. This is new and make IU the same as every other school in the country.

If a PNM ranks all of her chapters, she will get a bid.

basically if you rank all three chapters you pref, and none of them offer you a bid, then the top chapter on your list will have the option to take you as a quota addition. they can either take you, or not take you. so obviously if they say no, then you won't get a bid, but basically no chapters will really probably not take you. there's a slim chance of them not wanting their quota additions

Your top ranked chapter does not have to take you. You can be matched with any of your three chapters as a quota addition.

Chapters do not get to select quota additions, they are automatic as long as the PNM lists all her pref chapters. The computer does it automatically with a complex algorithm.

Yes it is true. You would be added as a quota addition to one of them if you didn't match within the top 55 for each chapter. The only way you wouldn't match is if you don't put all your pref parties down. My chapter advisor talked about this today.

Not sure why sorority girls like to make pnms feel so anxious and belittled...

True, but not all the sororities have quota of 55. That is the minimum quota. Many houses have higher quotas, depending on housing, their needs etc.

READ: I preffed three chapters last year and did not get a bid, this is all crap, having three pref houses means nothing, I'm now rushing again as a sophomore

this is new this year and not the same as last year. If you write down every house you preffed at, you are guaranteed a bid at one of them. This will probably be your third choice house though.

#1 It is brand new this year. In PAST YEARS, even if you attended three and ranked all three, you could end up bidless.

#2 If you attend three pref parties (or two or one), you need to rank all the parties you attend in order for guaranteed bids to work. Leave one or more off your ranking and game over if you're not high enough on the bid lists of the sorority(ies) you ranked.

Why would it be the third choice house?? Explain?

It won't necessarily be, it all depends on the recruiting strength of the chapters you had. The program tries to place PNMs with their highest choices, but that's only possible when all those sororities have relatively the same number of PNMs ranking them high.

Let's say you had three sororities that had quota of 55, met their quota quickly and almost all the PNMs rank them as their top choice. The system will place you by taking into account your rank while balancing the total number of quota additions each chapter is needing to take.

Now the "not your first choice" can happen when one or two of the chapters are like those above, strong chapters with 55 quota who almost everyone ranks high. Then the other chapter is one that ends up as a lot of PNMs third choice and perhaps also has a higher quota. So they had a relatively harder time getting to quota (mathematically they had to invite more PNMs to their preference to get to quota), so you likely will end up in that house if you have to be a quota addition.

This all happens simultaneously in the system. The software looks at a lot of scenarios. The only thing you need to know is that if you rank all chapters you pref, you will get a bid. It just may be your second or third choice.

ok everyone HOLD UP
Yes IU rush is changing. Slowly but surely. Quota additions are becoming more common but that does not mean anyone is guaranteed a bid!
Also, just because a girl is a Quota addition it does not mean it is to her 3rd house. It could be her second or her first choice!! Many things factor in to where a quota addition girl will go such as how high up she is on a groups bid list, the total size of the chapters on a pnms list, and the size of quota itself.
So the minimum quota is 55, lets say you're number 100 on your first choices list, number 56 on number 2s list and number 60 on number 3s. You'd most likely get a bid from number 2, however what if numbers 1-55 on the first choices lost didn't rank them first? Well then you'd likely get a bid from the first chapter.
This is a very simplified version of how rfm works and there's dozens of situations that could happen for anyone. And there is no telling what pnm is where on who's list and why someone ends up a QA for somebody else. The point is if you get a bid from a house, they wanted to extend you one and invite you into their sitserhood.

Yes they are guaranteed a bid as long as they:

#1 Attend every preference party they attend
#2 Rank every sorority they attend a preference party for.

This is the new reality at IU. That particular part now works exactly the same as it does at every school in the US.

I didn't get asked back to any of my 3 for the pref round. Do I have any chance of a snap bid or quota addition, or is it over for me? I'm so upset.

These posts refer to the 3 houses where you pref, not what you think your top 3 are. You cannot be a quota addition for a house where you did not pref.

If you weren't asked back to any houses today then I would think you would be out of the running. Although you could always do informal recruitment!

If you didn't get invited to any pref parties, it is likely over for you. There's a remote possibility a sorority might not make quota and will contact PNMs who were dropped before pref to offer a snap bid before bid day, but that's not likely. I'm so sorry. Plenty of wonderful women end up like this each year. Take the next year to get involved, meet a lot of people and build friendships, and stay in touch with your friends who are new members and make sure they know you're still interested. This is the best possible way to improve your chances as a sophomore in formal recruitment or getting picked up as an open bid if a spot happens to open up before then.
