They can after 4 years. A change in major can add a fifth year and after year 4, in most sororities a member can go alum. Fifth year is about internships etc and usually 5th year seniors want to focus more on their careers and can save $ by not paying dues. Alum dues are almost nothing.

In my chapter you must become alum after four years, you're not allowed to be an active member past four years.
