pledging a frat?

by: Question

Hey whats up, I'll be a freshman at the U of A this fall and am moving down to Tucson in like 10 days for IFC recruitment.

My dad was in a frat way back when and talks a lot about what pledging was like and how much fun he and his buddies had. But one of my friends (at another school, not Arizona) says most of the frats don't do pledging anymore like maybe it's illegal? My dad says that can't be true, however he was in college a lonnnng time ago.

So it there still pledging for the frats or do you just join and become a member? Also if it still happens what can I expect out of pledging? Will it affect my grades?

To answer your question, yes, pledging occurs. You have to be mature about the process and how it effects your grades. Be forthcoming to the bros in the house. If you gotta study you gotta study. But don't make a habit of it. They will expect you to be there when called upon.

there are fraternities that do not have actual pledge classes, for example Sig Ep, ZBT, Phi Tau and LXA (if they recolonize). SAE is in the process of eliminating pledging across the board nationally, other fraternities are shortening their pledge programs or moving to get rid of it altogether. I think in 10 years the whole concept of 'pledging' may no longer exist.
