asa coming to campus

by: pan

Now that ASA is officially joining panhellenic at U of A, what do you think this means for other sororities on campus? Obviously new sororities don't have much of an effect on top houses, but what about the bottom? Will this be good for houses like Tri delt and AXO? Or will it take potential members away from them.

For anyone that wasn't around when AXO recolonized a few years ago, it destroyed tri delt. All the girls that would have gotten bids to tri delt chose to try their luck with a colony because it gave them a chance to build something rather than join a house with a poor rep.

What do you think? Discuss.

They're a no name small sorority with no nearby chapters or alum support. They probably can't even get a house. I predict tri delt will look much better compared to them and asa will be gone in a couple of years.

Anyone know if they've secured housing? They have no chance of survival without a physical house.

Just checked and apparently this is the FIRST ASA chapter in the PAC 12. Wut. Why would they pick Arizona? Did they do any research on the greek life culture? We have a cut throat greek life. They'll never last. Shame.

They're obviously insane, but I think the problem is no other sorority wants to come on here! Getting a small weak national with no money or house won't fix our problem

I don't blame other sororities for not wanting to come here. But ASA is setting themselves up for failure. Are they really this stupid? We need to make more positive changes to our greek system, such as supporting our weaker sororities, and stop kicking off fraternities and adding new ones like they mean nothing.

How about instead of trying to convince everyone on greek rank that you're "great", you actually put a little effort into your appearances and recruitment? Then you may actually BECOME great...

AXO had a pretty strong recruitment when they came on, they were able to get like 250 girls to sign up initially. A lot dropped but the prospect of getting their house back probably helped a lot. I could see ASA taking the tan building by PhiDelt and the Softball stadium, that used to be a fraternity/sorority house.

AXO IS S LARGE NATUONALLY KNOWN SORORITY WHO ALREADY OWNED THEIR HOUSE. THEY TOOK ALL OUR RRJECTS WHEN THEY OPENED, WELL EXCEPT MAYBE TRI DELT REJRCTS. HAHA ASA IS NOTHING.

It would have made more sense if it were a sorority like DZ who is strong as ASU but nonexistent at UA. One of the reasons AXO recruited a decent colony was because they brought down their eye candy from tempe to rush during set 1. And yes, they knew they'd be getting their house back the following year.

The closest collegiate chapter of ASA is UT El Paso.... I'm guessing that's not a large chapter.

They do have an alumnae chapter in Phoenix but that's not exactly surprising because Phoenix has a lot of transplants from all over.

Their only hope is that their alumnae chapter provides them the support they need. Otherwise we may witness a failed colonization which might be pretty interesting because that hardly ever happens. But then again most sororities aren't this stupid lmao

I honestly can't wait to watch this go down.

by: 😼Apr 5, 2017 8:59:24 PM

I know right? DZ already has a record of failure here though. Twice they've been here and closed for low numbers and they had a house too.

I think this is going to be a repeat of Zets Tau Alpha because they only lasted a couple of years in the early 90's. No other Arizona chapters and no name recognition and no house is a recipe for disaster.

I'm so confused. How does a college add in a new sorority? How does rush work for them? Does any girl just sign up and say they want to be in that sorority or is their rushing for it? If so, how is there rushing for a sorority with no members?

same way a fraternity does. Nationals comes in, recruits a bunch of people, helps them get set up, and then turns the chapter over.

The real key is a strong alum base/ national group.

So basically for a new sorority to come to campus, there needs to be an opening for expansion. Panhellenic needs to approve it, and then sororities will send people from nationals to make a presentation to Panhellenic as to why they should pick their sorority to be able to colonize at their school. In our case, I believe ASA was the only one to present, so they weren't in competition with anyone for the spot. Panhellenic says, "ok" and then their nationals gets to work in planning their colonization. Although in ASA's case they call it an "emerging chapter" rather than a colony.

They send girls from nationals, or other schools to our campus and it usually starts with a table on the mall. They pass out information, advertise their sorority, etc. They'll most likely make an instagram and start following girls who aren't in sororities.

They may have an informational day during set 1 of rush. Then after formal recruitment is over, they'll begin recruiting members. You'll sign up to go to their events, and they may call you in for an interview. Then they have their "bid day" which occurs several weeks after regular bid day.

That's pretty much how it works.

Anyone here heard of ZTA trying to come back? Ive heard from someone that they dropped a couple million dollars for the University to find them land and build them a house or buy someone house if they get kicked out but the problem is they cant find any land for them nor has anyone been kicked out.

By: Question
by: fiveApr 6, 2017 9:04:38 PM

That doesn't seem likely, they were only here five years back in the 90's and did not even have the chance to establish strong ties. The only other consideration may be ZTA is known for strong support of any housing they have under one big housing umbrella. Just speculating, but maybe if ZTA had a house here before they still own it? Or a ZTA house was bought-out by the university when ZTA left with the promise the university would sell them a different one should they return?

I heard this specifically from someone high on the Greek system. They basically told U of A if they find them a location they will pay arizona a good amount to go with it. ZTA is massive. But the only problem here in Arizona is that reality sucks and it's getting harder and harder for the Greek system to grow.

NPC sororities work together for the well-being and betterment of women within all their groups. No one group is considered the absolute most perfect and best. Each group provides services, values, standards and experiences that women of every age can use and proudly promote when recruiting new members.

Truth be told, no other NPC group will even consider coming to AZ. That's why it took so long for an NPC to show interest in the first place. There are the great AZ greek housing issues and giant new member classes to consider.

Campuses with AZ's greek-life size and character are now having to accept smaller and less well-known sororities, with Auburn, Missouri and Indiana Universities as example. So get used to it, because interest in belonging to a sorority here remains high and it doesn't matter which NPC group provides the service of an emerging chapter. ASA has been properly chosen and deserves the chance to grow and develop.

Did anyone posting here attend the Alpha Sigs expansion presentation, or sit-in on the negotiations between them and campus officials? Can anyone here legitimately enlighten us as to ASA's intentions when they colonize? Are they asking to come-on as an intentionally smaller group, and/or one without housing?

Did anyone here previously contact the "higher and better" sororities and beg them to colonize here? I believe someone else posted the truth that NO OTHER CURRENT NPC WHO IS NOT ALREADY HERE wants to come onto campus and colonize.

There is a greek history at Arizona that smacks of the very same poor attitude shown here to a group who is not yet a colony, but has merely been invited. You may not be old enough to know of it, but the NPC groups who will not come here know of it and it is why they will not colonize.

So please allow the ASA colony to grow and thrive at its own pace without the BS attitudes and smack-downs shown by ignorant students on this website. Your Arizona greek life can only benefit from more mature actions and attitudes.

Correct me if I am wrong.

But isn't A Sig about to get kicked? Also, they have been on campus before and have tried many times to get going again.

Also fraternities are always getting kicked off, if there wasn't a stream of colonization then there would be no fraternities left. If you look back like 10-15 years, the only houses who haven't been kicked off and recolonized are like SAE, AEPi, BETA and Phi Delt.

Everyone else: Sig Chi, Pike, KS, Fiji, Dchi, Pikapp, Delt, KA, TKE, PhiPsi, Sammy, ZBT, Sig Ep, Chi Phi, A Sig, Theta Chi, Delta Sig etc have been kicked and recolonized within the last 15 years.

You really need to stop posting here. It took two clicks to figure this out (who you are and how ASA got to Arizona). We are a lot smarter than you think. And fyi two other NPCs (actually three but who's counting) were interested: Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta (both were going to present - do the research) and Zeta Tau Alpha.

Nice try blaming us "poor attitude" - right... you're starting to look like United Airlines now.

After Arizona opened for expansion in November 2015, Delta Zeta was the sole presenter of interest. Sole. They intentionally withdrew their interest in part due to the great housing issues plaguing Arizona. If two other groups toured campus, they did not present.
