can someone explain the importance of "camp"?

by: oos

I stopped going to summer camp when I was like 13. Why is "camp" so important to Texas/south in general? I would think it would be looked upon better if one traveled and interned in the summer rather than do watersports and arts and crafts at sleepaway camp but to each their own I guess.

I looked at Waldermer's website and they advertise that girls who attend their camp will develop their "table manners".. wtf

no one learns them at their family's table anymore because everyone including parents has their noses glued to their screens. They also learn how to sweep, mop and pick up after themselves -- which is even more alien than table manners in some households.

table manners are something your supposed noble families should have engrained into your conduct from birth and highchair feeding.

I rest my case.

for the classless reply that the "truly wealthy" don't need to know how to do anything for themselves around the house.

Table manners are imperative to a girls future. You can't get a good job without knowing which fork is for salad!! Do you really think these women would be able to marry desirable men without the right table manners?!?!?! I'm glad they are preparing for their futures at camp.

my parents taught ME manners. They are second nature. I used camp to have fun, not to learn how to be a "lady" and a god awful snob. I really hope I didn't go to camp with some of y'all, but unfortunately...

My mother signed me up a birth to attend Waldemar, I went for 8 years and loved every minute of it! It is a magical place and I have every intention of sending my daughters (if I have any) there. However, it certainly does not make me better than anyone else maybe luckier though, lol). I have also been fortunate enough to travel extensively overseas and throughout the US. The experience of camp and all my travels has very much contributed to my self growth, education, cultural awareness and of course net-working!

hahahah "cultural awareness" ....spoken like someone truly cultured. Riiiiiight.
Just remember there will always be people who've done more without having to go to camp. Can you guys just give up already. God am I SO glad I'm not from Texas either.

To "lol" above: Why do you have to be so rude?! I wasn't talking about camp making me culturally aware I was talking about my traveling experiences. And OF COURSE I'm sure there are tons of people that have done more than me that didn't go to camp! Why do you have to be so defensive about me sharing my PERSONAL camp experience?!

Stop saying"y'all", I had nothing to do with that. If someone is rude enough to "tear someone shreds" for not going to camp that's their problem it doesn't mean you have to stoop to their level, it makes you no better than them!

The more I read on the UT GR board the more I thank God I'm not from TX. Y'all are seriously crazy. The importance placed on camp, sorority and JL couldn't be any shallower or narcissistic. Must be exhausting constantly trying to climb that social ladder.

Hilarious all the moms that get on here to defend it too.

Ditto Bevot's comment. If you're not from TX -- and you think the importance of sororities are shallow and narcissistic -- why are you even wasting your time on GR? So that you can feel superior?

Camp Longhorn is just training for high school 2.0.l (or I guess camp 2.0).
It’ll get you into a sorority where you already know everyone and you stay in your bubble until you graduate.

Totally 100%

Lots of CLH lifers get into UT because of their $ and CLH connection.
