sorority time limit

by: Curious.

I'm kinda new to college and this whole Greek thing. If I joined a sorority at another school and I don't want to be in the Chapter here can I wait a certain amount of time after dropping and join another sorority?? I heard that was possible with a certain time period?

If you pledged but we're not initiated, you shouldn't have a problem, technically speaking. People won't look favorably on you though. However if you were initiated, you cannot join another sorority. I suggest affiliating with the chapter and giving it a chance.

If you initiated at your old school, you are a member for life. You can choose to go through the affiliation process at UT or you can take alumna status early.

If you did not initiate, you are a free agent and can pursue COB (informal) opportunities this year or wait and go through formal next fall. Just beware that as a sophomore, you need major connections and a high GPA and as a junior, your chances of getting a bid are close to zero.

But how exactly will people here know I joined another sorority in another school if I don't tell them? I understand there are rules but how can they keep track of so many girls will they call my old school or sorority and ask?

National Panhellenic has a database that serves all Panhellenic organizations. Upon accepting a bid, your name is added to the database, and then your info is updated upon initiation. Don't do something to embarrass yourself. If you were initiated, just realize the opportunities you have to participate with a local alumnae chapter. Every sorority has one in major cities so reach out and get involved. It sounds like you don't care for the local chapter at UT, and maybe that's because you've met girls you don't like and maybe it's because you think the house isn't up to the level of the chapter you originally pledged. Either way, be an active alumna, become an advisor, and work to improve the chapter in whatever areas you don't currently like.

It's a small, small world. Even before Panhellenic could catch the fact that you already pledged & initiated, don't you think it would come up in your recs being sent to the UT houses or girls from your hometown who are actives at UT???

Don't try to game the system. 1) It's not possible and 2) you're only hurting your own reputation by showing poor character and ethics.

If your "kinda new" to college and Greek Life, just de-pledge now if you really hate your sorority's UT chapter that much - which is close-minded, but whatever. You already sound like a special snowflake who will of course get a PKT bid as a upperclassmen transfer....

I wasn't trying to be mean. I genuinely am interested in the process because I've read that's it is against the rules, but at the same time I've read of girls who have done it. It's just me trying to understand how some have done it if it's not possible. I am just not going to end up doing Greek life here.

Even if you've "read" of other girls doing this...it's still just a myth. It's next to impossible due to the Panhellenic database. I think your best bet is to stay unaffiliated with Greek life at your current school, work on getting an amazing GPA and extracurricular involvement, and make Greek connections at UT. Whether it's current girls in the chapter, the Austin/UT Panhellenic association or Panhellenic association in your current town. That way you'll have good rec opportunities and people to vouch for you. But like Go Greek said, it'll be tough as a transfer. Just manage your expectations and make sure you look at all chapters. :)
