Over the course of rush week how many houses will we visit each day? And how is that determined? Do we pick which houses we want to see our do the houses eliminate girls as the week goes on? And if you go to a preference night, how high are your chances of getting into that house?

Officially, there are THREE rounds in formal recruitment. A few days before FORMAL recruitment, you can attend an optional house tour event. This is a great opportunity to meet the members and see their houses. It is very casual.

Once Formal recruitment starts, you will attend all 5 houses on the first day. The next day, you will attend up to 4 chapters (some girls might attend less). On the last day, Preference, you attend up to 2 chapters (some girls might get less).

Please keep in mind that this is a MUTUAL selection process. Your are narrowing down your preferences and the chapters are narrowing down theirs.

After the 1st & 2nd round of parties is over, you will create a list of which houses you like best in order of how you like them. The chapters will then make a list of girls they want to invite back.

Each chapter has a number of girls they must "release" and it is different for each chapter based on some stats from previous years. Basically, the strongest chapters are required to release more girls than the less strong chapters. If your top chapters have you on their list, then you will go back there for the next round. If one of your top choices doesn't have you on their list, then Panhellenic goes to your next top choice, etc.

So, this means that DG & APhi will release a lot more girls than Theta & ADPi. Kappa will be somewhere in between.

Preference is a bit different. If you attend Preference for a chapter, you are automatically on the bid list for that chapter. No more releases are made by the chapter. They submit a list of everyone that comes to Preference in the order that they like them. YOU will do the same. If you only have 1 party for preference, then you either drop out of recruitment or put them down on your list. If you have 2 chapters for Preference, you say which is your 1st and which is your 2nd choice. Then Bid Matching attempts to match you with your first choice, if possible. The PNM is given every opportunity to get their 1st choice. You must list all chapters where you attend preference to be ASSURED of a bid. It happens every year that girls refuse to list both chapters. They call this a SUICIDE. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't.

If you attend only 1 chapter for preference and list them on your card, then you are assured of a bid.

Panhellenic will set a QUOTA or the maximum number of new members that the chapters can have. If your favorite chapter fills up with their QUOTA of new members before they reach you on their priority list, then Panhellenic will see if you match with your 2nd choice. As long as you "play by the rules" and "maximize your options", you will get a bid to one of your preferenced chapters.

I think most girls have at least one house for Preference. It does happen that someone might get completely released by all houses, but it is a super small number. What is more common is that a girl gets her heart set on one or two and then drops out when she gets released from those. It's really a mistake because there are other chapters that obviously like them. Trust me when I say that ALL the chapters offer a great opportunity for fun and friendship. There isn't a BAD house at Santa Clara. So, stick it out and go for it all the way to the end, wherever it leads you. Good luck!
