They are worth it. While they don't promise anything, they show the house that you are taking interest in them. Its always good to show a chapter that you care.

we must ask ourselves what does it really mean to be a "top house?"
if it's based on which sororities hang out with which frats, that really doesn't prove anything because there are girls in "middle" houses with top tier friends/boyfriends and vice versa.
and in terms of social events, every top/middle house and even the lower ones have PACKED social calendars because of how many fraternities there are.
at the end of the day, you choose the house that fits your personality best whether it's sweet, social climbing, nerdy, whatever. there is no single house that should be desired by every person.

Letter's of rec unfortunately won't really do anything.
Designer labels, on the other hand will.
