collections after dropping?

by: yikes

So I'm dropping my sorority, and I sent in my letter late august. The chapter just got back to me and told me that I have to pay all my dues until my letter is processed or else all my dues will go to collections. I really don't want to pay for this scam, since I won't even be in Vancouver this year. Can they actually do that, or have you heard of anyone being called to collections because of this?

They’re not allowed to charge you if you put in your letter late August. Just ignore it they can’t do anything feasible about it

I dropped right when the semester started and then I just ignored all communications. Am i going to be fine too?

Yeah, they can definitely do that. Sending in a letter does not mean your membership is automatically void or that you are no longer part of that organization. The letter just tells them that you plan on dropping and then they can start the process of "dropping" if that makes sense. Think of it as that office episode where Micheal just "declares bankruptcy" it's on the same lines as that. Sorority dues are legal financial agreements and not paying them will affect your credit rating and they can definitely be sent to collections
