rushing as a junior

by: JustCurious

I’m thinking about rushing sororities as a Junior and just wondering if I’m wasting my time and money. I have a rec letter from a former alumna and am really involved on campus. Will I be cut from all the “good” sororities? Or do I have a fair chance?

A couple of things: Alumnae rec letters don't do anything at Purdue, we're not in the South, they're read, but really have no footing on decision making. Juniors are tricky, panhell requires each house to hit a quota for sophomore rushees, but houses can drop juniors just because you're a junior. Honestly, you'll probably be dropped by a lot of houses, not every, but most. The thing is you put the most into a house as a sophomore and junior (general make-up of leadership councils/exec boards) every housed sorority has a two year live in requirement at Purdue. Houses want people that can commit for long amounts of time, being a junior means you probably have many other commitments by now and that just doesn't mesh well. If you really have a desire to rush and join a house, by all means, go for it. But be prepared to not be in a traditionally "good" house.

If a house were not "good" it would not have been invited to reside on, and remain upon, campus.

All groups want people who can commit for a long time, but well-qualified and enthusiastic women are most welcome to go through recruitment at any time as new member placements do not hinge solely upon graduation standing. Committing for a long time can also be defined as for a lifetime, which any young student may achieve no matter her undergraduate year in university.
